Surprising fans seem to be BTS’ thing but no one was ready for the bomb that fell on June 14. To celebrate their ninth debut anniversary, the global K-pop group got together to host their ‘2022 Festa Dinner’ with fans on YouTube Live. While having dinner together and chatting about their latest comeback, Suga announced that BTS would be going on an indefinite hiatus. The cheerful mood turned sombre as the group suddenly revealed that the new chapter everyone could already guess was of the members going solo and doing individual activities.

That wasn’t the only shock as leader RM confided that they were supposed to go on their break in 2020 actually. Fans were aghast with the possibility of 2021-22 not happening and not getting all of the amazing content if it wasn’t for the pandemic. RM said that ‘On’ which was released in early 2020 and their canceled world tour that year was supposed to be their last group activity before they started focusing on their solo work. And with BTS crying, fans too couldn’t hold back their tears as social media was in chaos with the unofficial disbanding of the group.

HYBE says BTS not on hiatus

While some optimistic fans tried to convince others that BTS was simply crying because of the new chapter, others were sure that they would not get any new group activities anymore. However, AP News has shared a statement reportedly from HYBE that there seems to be some miscommunication. The report claims that while the word “hiatus” was used in the English subtitles, the group was not going on an indefinite hiatus. The statement says that there are group projects, “BTS are not taking a hiatus. Members will be focusing more on solo projects at this time.”

However, this is no consolation as it still means that we will not be getting frequent group comebacks and activities since solo work will take priority. Fans also reasoned that BTS was probably crying because of the new uncertain territory of going solo. Additionally, many couldn’t help but call back to groups like One Direction and K-pop groups like BIGBANG that never actually disbanded but also never got back together. Some fans also think the statement is a media play to control HYBE’s stock prices that fell drastically after the hiatus news.

‘I'm having trust issues’

There are some fans who couldn’t help but get relieved with HYBE’s statement as it still meant we would get some group activities even if it wasn’t group music. One fan tweeted, “Bring back my tears. I cried for almost 5 hours and I just stopped 5 minutes ago because I thought they will be on hiatus then this good news dropped on my timeline. Okay, RIP my tears. So BTS, Life Goes on. bighit/hybe: it's a prank.”

Another made a reaction meme, “Hybe intern when they came on twitter to see what we were doing.” One fan added, “Hybe waited till after every army went through the five stages of grief to release this statement😭 bts and armys aren’t going anywhere.” Another wondered, “I feel like the company released this statement about BTS not going on a hiatus to prevent Hybe's stock from taking a dive. The guys were very transparent with us during their dinner. Hybe shouldn't insult our intelligence.”

But some fans feel HYBE’s statement does not change anything, “That hybe statement is the same thing the tannies said. like we knew they were gonna keep doing group stuff (run bts) bc they said it. and hybe is probably only trying emphasize it’s not a hiatus so that they don’t get lumped in with others since they are remaining a group.” Another explained, “Guys its still a break from group music and concerts, thats why bts was crying, its the first time in 10 years they will be braving the music industry as solo artists, it is a big change, but that doesn't mean they wont still have group activities, thats what hybe means.”

One fan prayed, “DONT END UP LIKE ONE DIRECTION THATS ALL I ASK.” A multi-fan was worried, “Everyone is like “don’t compare one direction and bts on their hiatus announcement” but i am so f**king traumatised from the one direction hiatus that i’m having trust issues i apologise.” Similarly, another said, “Why is this bts going on hiatus thingy bringing me back all the one direction pain.”
