Who is Normandy? 'American Idol' singer has fans divided over 'Minnie Mouse' voice
Never judge a book by it's cover, and this is a lesson that both the judges and the audience of 'American Idol' Season 20 learned the hard way when Normandy from Baltimore auditioned on the ABC show. Clad in a pink outfit, with unicorn shoes and carrot handbag, Normandy's animated look matched her high-pitched voice.
In her introductions segment, the self-described gamer explained how she has struggled with being taken seriously due to her voice. But she was hoping for the 'American Idol' judges- Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan to not go down the same patch and that they would take her seriously. Unfortunately for her, the judges were initially amused by both her looks and voice. When Normandy began talking, the judges couldn't help but laugh, which did leave her feeling a bit hurt. When she announced that she would be performing Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary', Katy was done and walked out saying she was done with the show.

Katy returned to her chair shortly after that and watched Normandy audition. Normandy shocked everybody when her voice suddenly switched to a deep, rich tone while she was performing, and immediately returned to her animated voice while she talked. The judges were pleasantly surprised by the transition in her voice and empathized with how difficult it must be for her in day-to-day life.
They all said yes to Normandy and gave her the coveted golden ticket to Hollywood, as they were curious to watch her journey. Fans, however, were feeling divided over Normandy's performance, while some fans loved her persona and voice, others weren't pleased by it. A fan tweeted, "Normandy may sound like Minnie Mouse, but her singing is spot-on! #AmericanIdol." Another fan wrote, "NORMANDY SPEAKS LIKE A 4 YEAR OLD GIRL BUT SINGS LIKE A 30 YEAR OLD WOMAN AND IM HERE FOR IT #AmericanIdol." "I think Normandy is adorable. She will go far in life. If it isn't singing she can definitely do voice acting. #AmericanIdol," observed a fan. "I think I'm in love with Normandy on @AmericanIdol . I don't know how she'll survive competition rounds, but adore. #IdolPremiere #AmericanIdol," echoed a fan.

Few other fans felt that Normandy may have to drop her animated voice to be taken more seriously. A fan shared, "Normandy’s voice was to silly for #AmericanIdol and it became 1 of the worst performance in show history. This show just got a little not worth it because of it knowing I’ve been watching it since the beginning. If this keeps happening, this show won’t last." "Normandy with classic do anything to stand out.. but once a joke you stay joke on idol #AmericanIdol," pointed out a fan. "#AmericanIdol Sorry Normandy needs to change to be taken seriously in the music business.," added a fan. "It’s a no from me Normandy. #AmericanIdol," expressed a fan.
