Lim Young-woong has just proved that he is not a one-hit-wonder as his debut album has gone on to make a whopping 940k sales on day one of the album’s release. In 2021, the K-pop industry welcomed several indie artists who shot to fame and went on to dominate the charts and year-end music award shows. One of them happened to be South Korean trot singer Lim Young-woong.

Lim Young-woong is a 30-year-old artist who debuted as a trot singer in 2016. However, it wasn’t till the 2020 competition show ‘Mr. Trot’ that his career took off. Out of 17k participants, he ended up winning and was responsible for some of the iconic singles to come out of the show. The special single ‘Trust In Me’ released to celebrate his win went on to top the charts and earn him several wins at the likes of MelOn Music Award and Genie Music Award in 2020.

Lim Young-woong makes 940k sales on first day

2021 was even a bigger year for Lim Young-woong as he was invited to several year-end music festivals and won almost every nomination such as the Seoul Music Awards, The Fact Music Awards, Asia Artist Awards and Golden Disc Awards. The Korean trot singer’s singles like ‘My Starry Love’ and ‘Our Blues’ continued to top major music charts for weeks. Well, on May 2, Lim Young-woong finally released his debut studio album ‘Im Hero’ which went on to sell over 940k copies.

Lim Young-woong is almost a million-seller with the title almost in his grasp as his first-ever studio album went on to achieve the record of the highest-first day sales for any Korean soloist on Hanteo Chart. Additionally, he is in the same league as BTS as Lim Young-woong is the second Korean act following them to have the highest first-day sales. Meanwhile, ‘Im Hero’ is the fifth highest-selling album in South Korea following BTS’ ‘MOTS: 7’, ‘MOTS: Persona’, ‘BE’ and ‘Butter’.

‘This is iconic’

Since Lim Young-woong only dabbles in trot, K-pop Twitter was shocked to realize how popular he truly is in South Korea. One user posted, “This guy has Korea wrapped around this fingers.” Another joked, “The Ahjussies and Ahjummas fighting to get that album.” One user was impressed, “Who is he this is iconic.” Another said, “The main slayer.” One wrote, “He doesn't only have a fandom he has the general public who genuinely tune in for his songs.”

Another user shared, “Damn another day another slay, his power is insane.” Even Knetizens were in awe, “He doesn't even have foreign fans or overseas events. At this point, he's the one top.” One pointed out, “It is just the first day of the week hahaha he still has 6 days left.” Another Knetizen wasn’t surprised, “This is what it is.... Lim Young-woong's firepower is on another level.”
