'The Voice' Season 29 trailer shows Kelly Clarkson challenging Adam Levine and John Legend and hype is real
'The Voice' Season 29 is set to return to NBC with a two-hour premiere episode at 9 p.m. on February 23. The latest season of the Emmy award-winning show will see former coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine battling it out for the top prize. Dubbed 'The Voice: Battle of Champions,' it's a fitting title for the upcoming season as it features a coaching panel of only past winners, for the first time in the show's history. Carson Daly will resume his hosting duties, as in previous seasons. On February 2, People Magazine released the official trailer, which showcases the trio's competitive edge.
Legend returns to the red chair for his 11th season, while Levine comes back for his 18th season. Both appeared last on Season 27. Clarkson is back for her 10th season, having last coached in Season 23. In the trailer, Clarkson reminds her fellow coaches that she has won the most times among them. Indeed, Team Kelly has won Season 14 with Brynn Cartelli, Season 15 with Chevel Shepherd, Season 17 with Jake Hoot, and Season 21 with the musical group Girl Named Tom. Team Adam is not too far behind with three wins in Seasons 1, 5, and 9 with Javier Colon, Tessanne Chin, and Jordan Smith, respectively. On the contrary, Team John has won only once in Season 16 with Maelyn Jarmon, but seems poised to add another win this season.
Additionally, the coaches will also bring back several of their winning artists from past seasons. Girl Named Tom and Jake Hoot will return for Clarkson, Javier Colon and Jordan Smith for Levine, and Maelyn Jarmon for Legend. The fan-favorite artist Renzo, whose third-place finish in Season 27 left viewers shocked, will also get another shot at lifting the trophy.
Moreover, NBC has promised viewers a revamped season that 'will be infused with fast-paced, competitive elements, delivering a fresh twist on the format that raises the stakes for coaches and artists alike.' Among the format changes is a three-coach line-up, rather than the usual four, with each coach getting 10 artists on their team this time around. This season's competition is divided into four rounds: Blind Auditions, Battles, Knockouts, semifinals, and the finals. The Blind Auditions will consist of the Triple Turn Competition, in which the coaches will try to score the most 3-Chair Turns to gain a special advantage, called the 'Super Steal,' in the Battle round. This prize will allow them to stop another coach from stealing one of their artists.
The Knockouts will see the trio selecting two artists each from their past teams for an In-Season All-Star Competition. The chosen All-Stars will battle it out in head-to-head sing-offs, with CeeLo Green deciding the winning coach and offering two of their artists a guaranteed place in the finale. The semifinals will kick off with the top 9 performances, of which 4 will progress to the finale. Lastly, Season 29 will feature a brand-new voting block comprising superfans and former 'The Voice' artists. Fans can tune in to NBC on Mondays to watch the latest episodes of 'The Voice' or stream the next day on Peacock.
