CALGARY, ALBERTA: 'Blown Away' Season 4 contestant Hayden MacRae currently resides in Calgary, Canada with his family. The Netflix show contestant's three gorgeous glass pieces were displayed in Western Canada's largest commercial Art Gallery, Mountain Galleries.
He participated in the Netflix competition with the hopes of winning the show. Unfortunately, he took the biggest risk which cost him losing the trophy.
In the premier episode of the Netflix show, Hayden used the Incalmo glass-blowing technique to create three forms of dresses. He claimed that glassblowing and fashion kind of go hand in hand and the dresses packed full of colors would be perfect for his first display.
Hayden wanted to create a singular piece that weighed 40 pounds. He noted that he could have played it incredibly safe, but that's boring and he took the risk to make a large glass art with a 'lot of mass'.
Unfortunately, Hayden faced a disaster during the making process as the pipe broke off into the glory hole. He somehow managed to take the glass out of the glory hole but it hit the ground and broke into more pieces.
However, he still hoped to "find a way to make this piece work." He named his glasswork, 'A Dress Dancing amongst Broken Dreams.' The dresses were inspired by his love of color and how fashion celebrates that.
The Netflix show contestant tried to create his best art from the broken glass but that didn't pay well and he was eliminated in the first round only. The judges criticized Hayden's art and noted that his piece was really thick and heavy. Katherine Gray noted that she could give him points for being ambitious.
Who is 'Blown Away' Season 4 star Hayden MacRae?
'Blown Away' Season 4 contestant Hayden MacRae is a glassblower and an entrepreneur. He owns Fascapple Glass studio where he also provides classes to aspiring glassblowers.
He has been passionate about glass art since a very young age. In his profile, Hayden revealed that his grandmother used to read him a bedtime story 'Rupert the Bear' and the character's visit to a glass factory drew him to glassblowing.
Meanwhile, in the Netflix show, Hayden revealed that he has met a lot of people in his life who underestimated him and "told me I wasn't gonna be successful". He added, "So far, I've proved them wrong, and I'm here to prove them wrong again."
Hayden struggled with drug addiction when he was younger and also went to a rehab.
However, the Netflix show contestant claimed, "Glass replaced my addiction for sure. Blowing glass is what taught me how to overcome." He elaborated, "The reason I'm still clean to this day is because I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't do drugs again."
What was the prize of 'Blown Away' Season 4's first challenge?
'Blown Away' Season 4 featured extreme challenges that pushed the contestants' limits with a whopping prize at the end of every round. The winner of the first challenge received a prize package worth $3,000 including a trip to Berlin, Germany, for the next international conference of the Glass Art Society.
In the first challenge, the contestants had to show off who they were as an artist. To kick things into extreme mode, the judges wanted to see at least two glassblowing techniques. Meanwhile, the evaluation criteria were personal style, technique, and scale.
