‘House of the Dragon’ braces for all-out war as Season 3 trailer teases huge Battle of the Gullet
The fantasy drama series 'House of the Dragon' has revealed the latest trailer for its upcoming Season 3, which is slated to premiere in June 2026 on HBO. Created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, the 'Game of Thrones' prequel series focuses on the Targaryen Civil War as the Green (King Aegon) and Black (Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen) factions battle it out to claim the Iron Throne. The much-awaited official Season 3 trailer teases the Targaryen Civil War escalating into a full-scale dragon-on-dragon battle for the Iron Throne.
In the Season 2 finale of 'House of the Dragon,' Alicent Hightower promises to help her former best friend and current rival, Queen Rhaenyra, take King's Landing if the latter invades the capital city. She takes it one step further and even agrees to the execution of her (Alicent's) son and Rhaenyra's opponent, King Aegon. Rhaenyra can be seen in the trailer informing her inner circle by saying, "She will open the gates of the Red Keep and surrender to me." However, her son, Jace, seems more skeptical of Alicent's true motives and warns his mother not to trust her.
The third season of 'House of the Dragon' will begin on a fiery note with the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, which was initially planned to close out Season 2. Considered among the bloodiest sea battles in the history of Westeros, it ends with the Triarchy fleet (allies of the Greens) breaking the Velaryon blockade of Blackwater Bay and the death of Jacaerys Velaryon. The trailer showcases large-scale aerial battles, deadly dragon combat, burning ships, and thousands of casualties on both sides. In the aftermath of the battle, both sides commit harder to their desire for vengeance, making for an intense watch. Will the impending clash reshape the future of Westeros forever? Only time will tell.
'House of the Dragon' has faced criticism lately for deviating from the show's source material, George R.R. Martin's novel 'Fire & Blood.' Making Alicent a willing party to her son's defeat and execution is a major step away from the books, in which she stays loyal to her son and the Greens. The changes have not gone down well with Martin, who described his relationship with showrunner Condal as "abysmal," while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in January 2026. He elaborated on the situation by saying, "I thought Ryan and I were partners. We got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me. I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Finally, it got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them and they would give Ryan our combined notes.”
