‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ drops shocking update on Season 1 but HBO has bigger plans
One of the reasons why 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' has gone on to become so popular, despite its relatively short life on the air, is that it makes the most out of the little narrative arcs and artefacts. The HBO show is markedly different from its predecessor, 'Game of Thrones', or even the other spinoff, 'House of the Dragon'. As compared to the hour-long episodes that 'GoT' fans were previously accustomed to, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' features compact thirty-minute episodes, which, nevertheless, are equally gripping. The recently aired fifth episode of the HBO Max show, featuring the Trial of Seven, is a glowing example. However, some bad news follows with the sixth episode dropping next week.
All good things must come to an end. The upcoming sixth episode, scheduled to drop on Sunday, February 22, can rightly be called the debut season's finale. The bad news is that there will be some time before Season 2 of the show arrives, and we revisit Dunk and Sol in their adventures. Several factors led showrunner Ira Parker and the creative team to decide that the debut season would consist of just six episodes. For starters, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' is based on the 'Dunk and Egg' novella series written by George R. R. Martin. The debut season adapts the events of the novella 'The Hedge Knight', which itself runs to a mere 184 pages and is significantly shorter than the first novel in the same author's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series, i.e., 'A Game of Thrones'. Thereafter, the entire focus of the show's writers was to deliver the brevity of narrative scope as was enshrined in the literary source while simultaneously making the screenplay live up to the standards set by the flagship show.
In a previous interview with GQ, Parker had reflected on his approach when he said, "It was very helpful that HBO was so flexible with run time and span. When they first asked me if I wanted to do the show, I assumed they meant 10 episodes, hour-long each, like every other Game of Thrones season has ever been. But the fact that we can do six episodes for 30 minutes a pop allows us to be more compact and deliver something that is just a treat. Hopefully, it doesn't overstay its welcome and makes it all the more enjoyable." He continued, "We weren't stretching. We weren't doing any strange side quests with Dunk and Egg. We wrote it as if George had written a three-hundred-page book."
Despite the debut season ending with the upcoming sixth episode, fans of the show have no cause for concern. Even before the premiere of Season 1, HBO had already renewed 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' for Season 2, which can be expected to arrive sometime in 2027. The announcement was made by HBO's Chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, at a press presentation in New York in November 2025.
