'Sonic' universe expands as Paramount sets release date for new spinoff after 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4'
Paramount is doubling down on its most bankable hero in blue. The studio has officially confirmed that a brand-new Sonic Universe movie is racing toward theaters on December 22, 2028. This marks the next major expansion of the fast-growing 'Sonic' franchise. The untitled project, produced by Neal H. Moritz's Original Film alongside SEGA Sammy Group, will serve as a standalone spinoff separate from the mainline 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series. And it's arriving hot off the heels of the franchise's strongest year yet.
The announcement comes as little surprise considering the runaway success of 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3', which hit theaters just before Christmas last year and shattered expectations. The film debuted with a powerful $60.1 million domestic opening and went on to earn $236.1 million in North America alone. Globally, it thundered past nearly half a billion dollars, closing at $492.1 million and helping the trilogy push its combined tally to an astonishing $1.2 billion worldwide. That momentum led Paramount to swiftly greenlight 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4', scheduled for a March 2027 release.
However, the studio is making it clear that 2027 won't be the only year Sonic content hits the big screen. This new 2028 spinoff represents an entirely different project, signaling Paramount's confidence in the universe's long-term growth. But Sonic's domination hasn't been confined to theaters. On Paramount+, the franchise delivered another win with the 'Knuckles' spinoff series. The show quickly became the streamer's No. 1 Kids & Family title of all time, racking up more than 11 million global viewing hours during its first month. Its impressive performance helped in making 'Sonic' one of the most reliable cross-platform brands in Paramount's lineup.
Meanwhile, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' continued its victory lap once it hit Paramount+. The film surged to the top of the platform's movie charts and maintained strong engagement, giving the trilogy extended life well beyond its theatrical run. Among critics, the reception was equally enthusiastic. The threequel earned an 86% critic score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest praise the franchise has received to date. Collider critic Aidan Kelley echoed the sentiment in his 2024 review, awarding the film an 8/10 and applauding its consistency and heart.
"Overall, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' ends a refreshingly consistent trilogy that is just as good as its predecessors," he wrote, "Paramount has already teased its ambitious plans for the 'Sonic' saga, and if the series wants to live up to the lofty legacy of something like the MCU, then it needs to learn how to take things to the next level… 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' is certainly pointing things in the right direction." With a thriving trilogy, a record-breaking series, a fourth mainline movie on the way, and now a new spinoff announcing its arrival, Paramount is clearly keeping its foot on the gas.
