'Knuckles' Review: Idris Elba and Adam Pally's bromance enriches 'Sonic the Hedgehog' spin-off series
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Having stolen the hearts of fans in the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' films Knuckles finally gets his own story to shine as Paramount+ released the spin-off of the famous franchise, titled 'Knuckles', on April 26, 2024.
The creative brainchild of John Whittington and Toby Ascher, and picks up between the events of 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'.
The series centers on Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) who is having a hard time adjusting to his new life on Earth as his inner warrior yearns for adventure.
Unexpectedly, he finds himself mentoring Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), a clumsy deputy sheriff with bowling glory dreams. As they set out on a voyage, the duo's unusual combination serves as the central theme of the series' humorous dynamic.
With such an exciting premise, it's plausible to anticipate the series to live up to expectations; yet, it's worth noting that, along with its positives, the series has a major flaw that cannot be overlooked.
The series shifts focus from Knuckles the Echidna to Wade Whipple
Though the series is named after our favourite character, Knuckles, the focus skillfully switches to Wade, which made me wonder why the series is focusing more on the supporting character than the titular one.
While the first few episodes establish Knuckles as the main character, Wade progressively gains more screen time. This move disturbs the equilibrium, creating an odd scenario in which the series often seems like it's about Wade.
While Wade's adventures are funny, it limits the show's ability to delve further into Knuckles' character and past.
The miniseries skilfully sheds light on Knuckles the Echidna's psyche
While humour plays an important role, the series digs deeper into the psychology of the echidna warrior.
Knuckles appears to be tormented as he struggles with identity and purpose throughout the season. This introspective layer gives the character depth and allows for an unexpected level of emotional sensitivity.
The series also successfully develops the 'Sonic' universe in intriguing ways thanks to the world design that combines future technology with action-adventure, making it visually fascinating.
Fans will especially love the references to the Master Emerald and its role in Echidna mythology.
Idris Elba delivers a praiseworthy performance
A standout feature of the series is the bromance between Wade and Knuckles, which authentically conveys a profound sense of friendship on screen.
Idris Elba gives an outstanding performance as Knuckles, presenting the stoic hero with the ideal balance of seriousness and humor.
His interactions with Adam Pally's Wade Whipple are enjoyable to witness, as the unusual pair begins on a journey of self-discovery and camaraderie.
Wade is well portrayed by Pally, who adds his own comic style to the role of the naive deputy sheriff.
Despite Knuckles' obvious brilliance, Wade sometimes steals the show with his charming awkwardness and self-determined nature. Unfortunately, Knuckles is neglected in favor of Wade's character, which prevents the title character from progressing.
Although it lacks emphasis on its title character, 'Knuckles' is an overall enjoyable and humorous addition to the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' brand.
The action-adventure miniseries will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the Sonic world.
