'Will Trent' hero hits rock bottom after last year's shocking twist — season 4 may mark his healing era
ABC’s ‘Will Trent’ returns for its fourth season with its titular detective standing at an emotional crossroads, still processing the life-altering events that closed out last year. When the series picks back up, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) is carrying the weight of multiple revelations at once: the sudden presence of a biological father in his life, the near loss of a trusted mentor, and the reality that Angie, the one person he has never been able to fully let go of, is preparing to become a parent with someone else. The season 4 premiere, airing next year, offers an early glimpse into Will’s fragile state of mind.
A newly released first-look image, courtesy of TVLine, shows him standing quietly with his loyal dog, Betty. His expression is heavy and distant, as though he’s just absorbed devastating news. While details surrounding the moment remain under wraps, the visual suggests that Will is once again confronting a situation that stirs old fears and unresolved trauma. The new season begins with a major time jump, moving the story ahead five months from the events of the explosive Season 3 finale. By this point, Angie is well into her second trimester, and both Amanda and Ormewood are physically recovering from their recent ordeals.
According to executive producer Daniel Thomsen, the creative team chose to bypass the more procedural aspects of recovery to focus instead on what truly matters to the show. “[It helps writers to] skip over the non-fun parts of gunshot recovery,” Thomsen explained. Executive producer Liz Heldens noted that time jumps allow the audience to reconnect with characters who have been fundamentally changed, rather than watching them remain stuck in place. In her words, “It allows us to catch up with [our characters] after they've been through something. [We] find them in motion... and then fill in the blanks along the way.”
Among the most meaningful developments is Will’s decision to start therapy. He’s been quietly meeting with Dr. Roach, portrayed by returning guest star Margaret Cho, in an effort to establish healthier emotional boundaries. That theme, learning where to draw lines, threads through many of season 4’s storylines. Will and his newly discovered father, Caleb, are handling what it means to build a relationship from scratch. Amanda must decide how involved she should be as those bonds evolve. Meanwhile, Angie and Seth are adjusting to the realities of becoming parents, and Ormewood is wrestling with how honest he should be with his children about his health struggles.
While fans have wondered whether season 4 might represent a period of healing, the show’s producers caution that the process won’t be simple or pretty. Executive producer Karine Rosenthal described healing as something that often looks messy before it looks hopeful. “All our characters are going through growth that might look like they're falling apart, but ultimately they're getting to a place of healing,” Rosenthal explained. As per PEOPLE, ‘Will Trent’ Season 4 premieres Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 8 p.m. on ABC, with episodes available to stream the following day on Hulu.
