Ryan Gosling's 'Project Hail Mary' draws glowing reviews and here's when you can stream the sci-fi film
Ryan Gosling's 'Project Hail Mary' has yet to be released in the United States, but the film has already received rave reviews from critics. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with writing by Drew Goddard, the sci-fi drama is based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name.
The film premiered in the UK on Monday and will debut in cinemas on March 20. Furthermore, the film earned a 95% 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received strong reviews from major publications.
The movie also sees Gosling serve as one of the producers, along with Aditya Sood, Rachel O'Connor, Amy Pascal, Lord, Weir, and Miller. With reports of the film's success pouring in, the focus shifts to when the film hits streamers. With the usual template of movies staying in theatrical release for at least 4 weeks before hitting VOD and streamers, we expect 'Project Hail Mary' to hit Prime Video (since it is produced by Amazon MGM Studios) sometime in mid-May or early June.
The synopsis reads, "Ryland Grace (Gosling), a middle school science teacher, wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light-years to save his own species from the same fate."
Starring alongside Gosling are Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt, Lionel Boyce as Officer Steve Hatch, Ken Leung as Yáo Li-Jie, Milana Vayntrub as Olesya Ilyukhina, Liz Kingsman as Annie Shapiro, Orion Lee as Xi, Aaron Neil as Narender, James Ortiz as the voice and lead puppeteer of Rocky, the alien, and Priya Kansara as the voice of Mary, the Hail Mary ship.
Earlier, Weir spoke of the intelligent alien, whom Ryland names 'Rocky in the film's trailer. "It's really more a marketing decision by Amazon MGM, but the idea was no one's going to walk into that theater and not know about Rocky,” Weir told Polygon. "This is not a Darth Vader is Luke's father kind of situation. This is a core, central element of the plot that everybody's going to be talking about and that everybody who's read the book already knows about."
I know we are in the middle of this award season but looking ahead, a certain film coming out in the first half of 2026 has started screening around town for execs and reps and the early word is it’s not just in the mix but will be a top contender by years end. What could it be?

The movie may have just hit cinemas, but the Gosling-led sci-fi drama has already been considered a frontrunner for the Oscars next year. According to Deadline's Justin Knoll, "I know we are in the middle of this award season, but looking ahead, a certain film coming out in the first half of 2026 has started screening around town for execs and reps, and the early word is it’s not just in the mix but will be a top contender by year's end. What could it be?" his post read on X (formerly Twitter).
Gosling will be seen next in 'Star Wars: Starfighter' (currently in post-production). He also serves as one of the film's executive producers. He also has a producer's role in 'Love of Your Life' starring Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger in lead roles.
