Ryan Reynolds sets new record with 'Project Hail Mary'. Here's what we know about the sci-fi drama so far
Ryan Gosling has a marquee record to his name with ''Project Hail Mary'. The film's runtime makes it his longest to date, with 'Blade Runner 2049' previously holding the distinction. The new sci-fi film is estimated to be two hours and 46 minutes, three minutes more than 'Blade Runner 2049'.
Per Deadline, the logline sees "Ryland Grace (Gosling), a middle school science teacher, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light-years to save his own species from the same fate." Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the story is based on Andy Weir's bestseller of the same name. Also starring are Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.
Previously, Weir spoke of the intelligent alien, whom Ryland names 'Rocky in the film's trailer. "It's really more a marketing decision by Amazon MGM, but the idea was no one's going to walk into that theater and not know about Rocky,” Weir told Polygon. "This is not a Darth Vader is Luke's father kind of situation. This is a core, central element of the plot that everybody's going to be talking about and that everybody who's read the book already knows about."
In related news, Deadline's Justin Kroll heaped lavish praise on the upcoming film, calling it a potentual Oscars contender. "I know we are in the middle of this award season, but looking ahead, a certain film coming out in the first half of 2026 has started screening around town for execs and reps, and the early word is it’s not just in the mix but will be a top contender by year's end. What could it be?" his post read o X.
