Jason Momoa adds another gaming franchise to his packed slate, set to fight cosmic forces in this big move
Director Justin Lin's upcoming live-action film adaptation of 'Helldivers' just got bigger with the confirmed participation of Jason Momoa. Given Momoa's penchant for hard-hitting, action-driven roles, it can be speculated that the upcoming film would pack quite a few punches.
The 'Helldivers' video game franchise is produced by Arrowhead Game Studios, as per another report by Variety magazine. The original game hit the market back in 2015, and its sequel, i.e.,' Helldivers 2', went on to find tremendous success. The game sold over 12 million units worldwide after its 2024 launch. Apart from PC and PS5, the game has also expanded to Xbox, where it remains popular as of this writing. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Momoa has been cast as the lead in the movie, which is now eyeing a November 10, 2027, theatrical release.
Not much is known about the plot of the 'Helldivers' live-action adaptation. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the film would be borrowing the context already established in the video game franchise, where an elite detachment of soldiers who are known by the moniker Helldivers must battle it out against extra-terrestrial forces to save their home, which happens to be a fictionalized planet referred to as Super Earth. The initial screenplay of the movie was written by Gary Dauberman of 'It' and 'Annabelle' fame. The screenplay then passed through several hands before it ultimately came to Lin, who is himself considerably experienced in the action genre, with previous credits including the 'Fast and Furious' franchise.
Hutch Parker is the producer of the upcoming movie alongside Asad Qizilbash, representing PlayStation Productions and Lin himself via his own Perfect Storm Entertainment. This isn't the first time Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have come together to release a movie; the two houses previously collaborated on the Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg movie 'Uncharted'. The film is also a video game adaptation and went on to gross $407 million worldwide. Their portfolio also includes HBO's 'The Last of Us' and Peacock's 'Twisted Metal'.
Momoa has a full slate of upcoming projects. He will next be seen in 'A Minecraft Movie' from Legendary and Warner Bros., alongside Danielle Brooks and Jack Black. In addition, Momoa will appear in DC's 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,' portraying intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. Moving on, 'Animal Friends' is another upcoming flick with Ryan Reynolds, which is supposed to feature Momoa. To top it all, Momoa's recurring character, Duncan Idaho, is expected to reappear in the third instalment of 'Dune'. The 'Game of Thrones' alum was most recently seen on Prime Video's 'The Wrecking Crew' with Dave Bautista.
