ARMY everywhere were shocked when it was announced that we would be getting a BTS sitcom. It looks like K-pop stars have teamed up with Lotte Duty Free to release ‘Friends must fly out!’. Lotte announced that the sitcom would be available in theaters on September 9 in South Korea while global fans can watch it a week later on September 16 at 5 pm KST (4 am ET) on Lotte Duty Free’s social media platforms. But is it really a sitcom?

Lotte Duty Free is Lotte Corporation’s general duty-free shop and was the very first in South Korea. The conglomerate is one of the largest-run businesses in the country and has branched out into several industries. To promote their malls and duty-free products, they have roped in the likes of BTS as brand ambassadors. They also host several events like concerts, fan meetings, photoshoots and magazines which is why it wouldn’t be a stretch if they do produce a sitcom.

What is BTS sitcom?

However, the BTS sitcom isn’t what ARMY are thinking of. Unfortunately, it is not a television show featuring the BTS members. ‘Friends must fly out!’ is a commercial shot in a sitcom format. We see the boys promote Lotte products through hilarious mishaps and situations with recorded laughter in the background as seen in sitcoms. In fact, a month ago, they released a similar sitcom format commercial titled ‘Smile’.

Lotte Duty Free also announced an event where five winners would win a BTS x Lotte merchandise on July 7. They then made an Instagram post on August 31 revealing the date for the ‘Friends must fly out!’ sitcom commercial. They also announced a second event where fans can tag a friend in the post till September 5. Five winners would then get a BT21 Lock & Lock tumbler set on September 29. But since then they have taken down the post.

Since HYBE has been teasing movies and TV shows for BTS for a while, fans hoped that this would be it with BTS getting a sitcom. This is why many have been trending and hyping BTS sitcom on Twitter. But a few fans and fanbases caught on and have realized that ‘Friends must fly out!’ will not be a movie or a sitcom, but a commercial that will be shown before a movie begins. They, however, do hope that the commercial won’t be too short like the 1 minute 57-second BTS sitcom commercial ‘Smile’.

'A little skit'

Excited ARMY at first made tweets like, “We are getting a bts sitcom and I'm getting reminded of that episode of run bts where they shot a bts drama and there were so many takes because they couldn't control their laughters,” and “BTS SITCOM is coming out in a few weeks and I can already feel from the screen how chaotic it’ll be.” Another added, “I am just now absorbing that there’s gonna be a @BTS_twt sitcom???”

One fan explained, “It's not a movie, it will be shown in the cinema right before the movies start like a commercial.” Once ARMY understood what the BTS sitcom actually is they posted, “Hope it is long enough and not short like any random commercial.” Another said, “I hope its long enough like a little skit.” Regardless, fans were happy that they were getting the sitcom like commercial, "Actor bts coming soon."
