'Marshals' Episode 8 Recap: Duttons' enemy returns, leaving fan-favorite's fate hanging in the balance
CBS's Marshals has finally brought back a dangerous villain in Episode 8. Titled 'Blowback,' the episode revealed the whereabouts of Randall Clegg, played by Michael Cudlitz, who was introduced as a lifelong enemy of the Dutton family back in the third episode, 'Zone of Death.' His appearance puts the life of fan-favorite Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrea Cruz in danger, and the audience will now have to wait until the next installment to figure out if she survived.
Andrea is kidnapped by Randall and his fellow assailants while transporting the guns to forensics. As soon as the bag is lifted off Andrea's face, she and the viewers understand that Randall wants blood. "After what your team has done to my family, the only thing that concerns me is an eye for an eye," Randall tells Andrea. "This isn't a negotiation. Bit by bit, I've watched the life sucked from this land by faraway bureaucrats who care nothing for it. I've seen the blood of my kin spilled by their puppets. You all take and take and take until there's nothing left but a desert. It has been too dry for too long around here." The outlaw further says that he wants to become a "spark" that helps "burn the land clean." The episode ends with Andrea's fellow Marshals attempting a rescue operation after realizing that they have been duped into chasing Reed Pollard, one of the most wanted bank robbers in the country.
The episode welcomes another figure from the past in the form of Garrett (played by musician Riley Green). Garrett is initially introduced as someone who served with Kayce in Afghanistan and now works as a successful musician. Garrett is taken aback by seeing Cal and vice versa. The musician shares with Nate that they were once a part of a group called Four Musketeers. Cal and Garrett cross paths again in a pub when the latter is having a drink with Andrea and Kayce. Later, in a conversation where Cal discusses his misgivings about Garrett with Kayce, it is revealed that everyone's favorite chief was responsible for ending the new entrant's military career.
Later, Garrett reveals that things were not hunky dory for him. Looking for music gigs was exhausting, and even when he found them, the moment he stepped off the stage, anxiety took over again. Since leaving the military, he has found himself in a psych ward, jail, and even on the streets. The musician breaks down when he starts talking about his deepest fear. Garrett believes that he is paying for the death of Doner, the fourth musketeer. Avid fans will remember the name from the second episode, when Kayce said that it was "Doner all over again" during a disagreement with Cal. Kayce firmly tells Garrett that the death wasn't his fault. Kayce decides to look out for the former musketeer and asks him to stay at the ranch as long as he needs to get back on his feet. “We may not be teammates anymore; we’re still brothers,” Kayce announced.
Another major revelation in the episode comes in the form of Cal's unknown diagnosis. "I know it's a lot to take in," his doctor said. "I'll loop in a couple of specialists who have experience in these kinds of cases. It's important to know that you're not alone." The chief's condition remains under wraps, but it seems like things are taking a turn for the worse. The team leader also finds out about the relationship between Miles and his estranged daughter Maddie when he catches the duo kissing in a bar. The father is not entirely sure how he feels about the couple and finds himself in more hot water when his own romance with Belle hits a rough patch due to his insistence on 'professional' boundaries. It is safe to say that there is plenty to look forward to in the next episode set to air on April 26, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
