'Marshals' Episode 7 Recap: Kayce explores a new romance but struggles to move past Monica's death
The latest episode of 'Marshals,' which released on April 12 on CBS, set up romantic storylines for several main characters of the police procedural series. In addition to Kayce, the episode also sees Cal (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle (Arielle Kebbel), and Miles (Tatanka Means) following romantic pursuits, adding more depth to their characters. Episode 7 of the 'Yellowstone' spin-off series continues to follow Kayce Dutton's (Luke Grimes) personal and professional life as a U.S. Marshal after his wife Monica's death. In the latest episode, Kayce and his team embark on their next mission to protect a federal judge and her family from danger. Titled 'Family Business,' the episode is directed by Gonzalo Amat from a screenplay written by Dana Greenblatt.
The Marshals are called after federal judge Ayers and her husband, Blake, are nearly killed in a car explosion at the start of Episode 7. Cal, Belle, and Miles guard the judge’s home, where the couple stays with their teenage daughter, Fallon. After a sniper shoots at Fallon through one of the windows, the family is split up for their own protection. Judge Ayers is taken to the Marshals' HQ, and Blake and Fallon hide at Kayce’s house. The Marshals team realizes that Blake, not his wife, is the real target of the assassination plot. Blake works at a non-profit organization that provides medical supplies overseas; however, the charity is revealed to be a front for smuggling weapons to revolutionaries in Equatorial Guinea. The Marshals team locates the suspects, a group of former Delta Force operatives, and kills them following an intense shootout.
Shocked at her father's criminal activities, Fallon asks Kayce and Andrea if Blake is a monster. However, Kayce consoles the teenager by saying, "No father is perfect. Once you realize he was just trying to protect you in his own messed-up way, your anger will fade. I just hope that if you ever do decide to forgive him, he's still around to hear it." Last week's episode marked Monica's first death anniversary; however, Kayce continues to grapple with feelings of guilt over dating again after her death. After promising to show Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson) around Montana in Episode 4, Kayce finally follows through after she shows up at his doorstep. They spend a lovely afternoon together riding horses and bonding over their past experiences. However, Kayce confides in Andrea about his growing dilemma, telling her that he feels like he's cheating on Monica with Dolly. Andrea reminds Kayce that Monica would want him to be happy, which puts him at ease.
Furthermore, Dolly's rancher father, Tom, unwittingly puts a dent in their budding romance in Episode 7 of 'Marshals.' He invites Kayce for dinner and offers to buy his ranch so that he can add it to his cattle operation, leaving Kayce miffed. He feels blindsided by the father-daughter duo and excuses himself from the dinner, even dodging Dolly's goodnight kiss before leaving. But he changes his mind before the episode ends and is seen going on a horseback ride with her at sunrise. Elsewhere, Cal spots Belle's husband, Jared (Eddie Aguirre), kissing another woman, but refrains from informing his colleague. However, one drink with her at the HQ is all it takes for him to spill the beans.
In response, Belle delivers a shocker and admits that she's in an open marriage with Jared. She explains that her long hours at work took a toll on their marriage, and they mutually decided to try new options as a way to stay together for their son, Braxton. Cal and Belle's simmering chemistry all season long finally gives way to a drunken kiss, and potentially the start of a new romance in 'Marshals.' Furthermore, Miles also makes headway in his romantic life, which has been non-existent so far. By the end of the episode, he asks Maddie out on a date, which she accepts. Maddie teases him by admiring his confidence in asking out his boss' daughter, but how that plays out with Cal is yet to be seen. New episodes of 'Marshals' air at 8 p.m. ET on Sundays on CBS or stream the next day on Paramount+.
