'Jeopardy!' viewers left divided after Lisa Ann Walter's unfiltered on-air moment in high-stakes episode
Fans were taken by surprise when a celebrity contestant unexpectedly cursed on Jeopardy!'s 'Tournament of Champions'. Created by Merv Griffin, the game show has been winning hearts since its debut in 1964, thanks to its one-of-a-kind format of presenting answers first and questions second. Over the years, the show has witnessed its fair share of unexpected moments, and this one celebrity's unfiltered outburst is the latest addition to its long list of surprises.
The actress in discussion is 'Abbott Elementary' star Lisa Ann Walter, who competed on 'Jeopardy!' on Monday, January 26. Facing TJ Fisher and Mike Dawson, Walter failed to gain momentum as the round got off to a slow start, with Fisher leading at just $1,400 by the time Dawson uncovered the first Daily Double, as per TV Insider. Mike Dawson took an early lead after turning his $1,000 into a true Daily Double in the 'Bus-Podge' category, correctly answering, "Who are the Freedom Riders?" That put him at $2,000.
Walter later got on the board, but by the first break, Dawson led with $2,600, followed by Fisher with $1,000 and Walter at $800. During the interview segment, Walter joked that her 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' trophy would hold her ashes one day. By the end of the round, Dawson led with $4,800, Fisher had $1,400, and Walter fell to -$200 after a missed Philadelphia-related clue.
In Double Jeopardy, Fisher surged ahead by finding a Daily Double early, wagering everything, and correctly identifying "microaggression," boosting his score to $10,800. Fisher extended his lead after seeing the final Daily Double and correctly identifying Lake Chad, raising his score to $11,200. Later in the game, Walter, already in the negatives, missed another clue and reacted on air by exclaiming, "What the hell!"
As soon as the episode dropped, fans flocked to X to share their opinions, with one writing, "Did not have Lisa Ann Walter casually breaking the Jeopardy! decorum on my bingo card." Another fan stated, "Hell isn't a curse word. She's a lovely person and a fantastic actress. Who cares if she did curse. So many other things that are going on are worse than hearing a curse word," while a third added, "Oof, Lisa Ann Walter was at -$2,200 and couldn’t participate in FINAL JEOPARDY! The difference with celebs playing in the ToC is they can’t doddle. Regular contestants are locked in."

In the end, Fisher entered Final Jeopardy with $15,600 and secured the win despite an incorrect response, as Dawson wagered everything and fell to $0. On the other hand, Walter finished in the negatives and did not advance. Fisher will now participate in the semifinals beginning Tuesday, January 27.
