‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 3 finale sparks emotional reactions as fans process final twist: 'better end with...'
Whenever a show is catapulted to widespread fame, it always runs the risk of running afoul of its own fandom. Over the years, there have been long-running shows that were much revered during their runs but drew severe flak in their final seasons and episodes. While it's true that one show can't aspire to satisfy every member of the audience, the final episode of Hulu's 'Tell Me Lies' Season 3 has split the fandom into two, with one half praising the ending and the other half trashing the way in which the narrative threads were resolved.
It all began when showrunner Meghan Oppenheimer took to Instagram to announce that the third season would be the show's last. Oppenheimer highlighted that she and the other writers working on the show had originally envisioned 'Tell Me Lies' to conclude with the third season when she wrote, "After three amazing seasons of 'Tell Me Lies,' tonight’s episode will be the series finale. This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it." Her statement was further supported by other celebrities like 'Vanderpump Rules' alum Stassi Schroeder and cast member Tom Ellis, who showered their appreciation in the comments.
However, it wasn't long before fans of the show began expressing their discontent with how the third season ended. One user wrote, "better end with stephen getting hit by a car" while another user commented, "For those who have watched, feel as let down as I do by this ending bc seriously???" Another user quipped, "maybe yall shouldn’t have even renewed for season 3 and just canceled the show". This wasn't all, as the criticism extended to social media platform Reddit as well, and the r/TellMeLies sub-reddit was further abuzz with disapproving remarks.
One Reddit user wrote, "IM SORRY it was good and I loved every second but I didn't walk away amazed at all. Not enough time to flesh out the conclusions to each problem. Ugh... can't believe it's over forever now. Not only that, but I don't feel like I got what I deserved with this ending. So sad, it had a lot more potential." Another user summed up his feelings by explaining, "I just feel like it was hyped up to be way more than it was. They were like “it’s so controversial. People will be shocked and upset”…like no I wasn’t shocked, nothing that shocking happened. I wanted more justice for Macy. I wanted to see Stephen be taken down in a big way. I wanted Lucy to be better. It was a let down in my opinion." In any case, 'Tell Me Lies' remains one of the most popular drama shows of the contemporary era and is available on Hulu.
