'Love Story' ending explained: The heartbreaking final moments of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette's romance
After seven weeks, FX's ‘Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’ has reached its end as the final episode aired on March 26. Created by Connor Hines and backed by Ryan Murphy, the series focused on how fame can creep into a relationship and change things. The finale picks up right after last week’s argument, which ended with John walking out. He didn’t return that night, leaving Carolyn alone with her thoughts, her frustration, and maybe a bit of regret. Still, the couple tries to navigate through life together. John, portrayed by Paul Anthony Kelly, and Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, seek help, heading to a marriage counselor in an attempt to untangle what has gone wrong. The advice they receive is simple: take some space, breathe, and step back.
After the session, they end up at a bar. There, they talk and remember the early days of their relationship, before headlines and cameras turned their lives upside down. Carolyn reflects, “If only we knew then how good we had it.” Even when they agree to spend time apart, neither follows through completely. John turns to his sister, Caroline Kennedy (Grace Gummer), looking for guidance, while Carolyn leans on her sister, Lauren Bessette (Sydney Lemmon). They are both told, in their own ways, that love is worth fighting for, even when it’s messy. And so they try again. Carolyn steps back into the public eye briefly to support John at an event related to George magazine. Later, they recreate their first date at an Indian restaurant.
It’s here that Carolyn finally explains something she hinted at earlier in the series, “Please handle with care, not as tough as she looks.” She opened up about her guarded nature and why she kept people at arm’s length when they first met. Then, about 20 minutes into the episode, the timeline shifts. The date appears on screen, July 16, 1999, and everything starts to feel tighter. That’s the day the real-life tragedy occurred, when John, Carolyn, and Lauren boarded a plane bound for Martha’s Vineyard. Carolyn isn’t fully sure about going, but in the end, she chooses to be there with him. John checks the weather, a detail that might seem routine but carries a different weight given what’s ahead.
“it’s okay. just breathe, john.”

The final moments are handled with restraint. Inside the cockpit, as weather conditions worsen, John's face begins to tell a story that words don’t quite capture. He understands something is wrong. Carolyn senses it too, and wanting to be beside him, she says, “I want to sit with you.” There’s a knowing look they share as Carolyn says, “It’s OK, just breathe.” In the back, Lauren remains composed, trying to keep things steady, offering reassurance as tension builds. A flashing red light is shown cutting across John’s face, signaling engine trouble. And just like that, the screen fades to black, leaving everything else unsaid.
