Much like its predecessor, 'Beef' Season 2 is a perfect blend of drama, suspense, and a tinge of comedy. Starring marquee names Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny, the latest edition of the Netflix anthology follows three pairs of characters with distinct issues that converge into a major mess. With Season 2 now streaming on Netflix, we take a look at the storyline and the dramatic ending of the eight-episode dramedy.

What is 'Beef' Season 2 about?

The series starts with country club employees and a newly engaged couple, Ashley (Spaeny) and Austin (Melton). Life isn't as rosy as they think, as they face a severe clash between them. An opportunity to see their lives filled with cash comes when they are asked to bring their manager, Josh (Isaac), his wallet. Austin and Ashley witness a brutal fight between Josh and his wife, Lindsay (Mulligan), through the window. After initially filming it and deciding to notify the police, the pair mutually decide not to get involved. However, the plan changes when Ashley realizes that torsion in her ovaries requires immediate surgery to have children. They hatch a plan to blackmail Josh, who manages to get Austin a full-time role. But the move to trying to up the ante comes at a grave cost.

The show then shifts its focus to the strained relationship between Josh and Lindsay. While they show the world an image of staying in a perfect marriage, they privately agree to hate each other. Lindsay refuses the option of a divorce since Josh has gone bankrupt after spending her inheritance money on his ailing and dying mother. The two consider the possibility of having an affair, but that leads nowhere. To manage their finances, he decides to draw off money illegally from the club and looks at making Ashley a scapegoat should things go south. The final piece of the storyline sees the club's Chairwoman (Youn Yuh-jung), from Korea. She buys the club solely to use it as a front to whitewash the illegal funds used to cover up a death at the hands of her husband, Dr. Kim (Song Kang-ho).

The trio's actions and the consequences that follow

Soon after, the Chairwoman realizes that Josh is using club funds, and the domino effect begins. His actions thwart Ashley's surgery chances, who, in retaliation, breaks into Josh's home and puts some of her blood in his juice. To add, she leaves the door open only for their dog to be killed by a fox. Austin, in the meantime, forges documents to get a job at the club after he starts taking a liking to the Chairwoman's assistant, Eunice (Seoyeon Jang).

Things begin to get murky with Episode 7 titled, 'The Hour of Separation.' The club members take a VIP trip to Seoul, where the Chairwoman sees an opportunity to wipe her hands clean. She invites Lindsay, Ashley, and oblivious club member Ava (Mikaela Hoover) to a girls' trip. It is later revealed that her intentions are also to shift the group's focus after she has Woosh (BM), the club's tennis coach, killed after he tries to blackmail her for a VP role in one of her companies.

But Eunice learns of the murder. She heads to Austin for help, and the latter advises her to back up the evidence onto a USB drive. Drama unfolds in copious measure on the flight to Seoul when Ava remains asleep, Austin attempts to help backup the evidence, while also mulling over telling Eunice about having feelings for her. Except that Ashley gets wind of his plans. The drama and the rage climb a few rungs higher when Lindsay comes to know about Ashley's actions leading to the death of her dog. And in revenge, wipes the rim of Ashley's drink on the toilet seat.

'Beef' Season 2 ending explained

Things come to a head when Josh realizes that a Korean agent has been assigned to kill him for siphoning the money. He, however, ends up stabbing the agent. Seeking refuge, he turns to his friend Troy (William Fichtner) and attempts to convince him to head to Seoul. Unknown to Josh, Troy has already reported his friend's fraud to the police. At the other end, Eunice hands over the evidence to Austin. Meanwhile, the relationships are shown to take a drastic turn, along with a major twist. Josh sends a voicemail to Lindsey explaining what happened, and Austin tells Ashley he isn't in love with her anymore.

As the respective pairs grapple with their personal issues, a bombshell reveal sees that the Chairwoman's husband, Dr. Kim, has been secretly working with the police authorities to get her jailed. A dramatic action sequence ensues when the Chairwoman, in her final moments, delivers a stinging speech accusing all their relationships of being purely transactional. This sees Austin and Ashley reunite, and Josh takes the blame for everything and is sentenced to prison, while Lindsay just rekindles her love for her husband. The finale ends with Austin and Ashley running the club and having a baby. Lindsay is shown to have remarried and has a child. Josh serves his time, and his actions have a bittersweet end. Quite simply, 'Beef' is a lesson on love, greed, and how the latter always comes with dire consequences.
