‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ CinemaCon update reveals heartbreaking twist in Peter Parker and MJ’s story
As the release date for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' nears, fans are being treated to exciting teasers from the highly anticipated movie. CinemaCon 2026 featured an exclusive scene from the franchise's next installment, which was screened for the in-house audience. Additionally, two new posters were also released for 'Brand New Day.' One features Spidey fighting against The Hand (a group of red-clad ninja assassins), and the other shows MJ's face reflecting in the eye of Spider-Man's mask. The upcoming movie is set four years after the events of 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' in which the world (including his friends) forgets who Peter Parker is.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the clip showcases a lonely Peter Parker seeing his old friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) at a bodega and following him to a house party. He approaches Ned for a casual chat and learns about his obsession with Spider-Man's true identity, which he has narrowed down to two people (neither of whom is Peter). Ned shows his 'new friend' a wall covered with photos and news clippings of the webslinger and also shares that he has created a 'Spider-Tracker' to keep tabs on the friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter's heart skips a beat when he spots MJ at the party, and he introduces himself as 'Maynard.' He overhears MJ telling Ned that she turned down a corporate job offer and is waiting "for something great." However, his heart sinks when he sees MJ kissing her new boyfriend, and he flees the scene as he gets emotional.
The latest installment of Marvel's franchise takes a grittier, darker turn compared to the previous films. It centers on Peter's rebirth as an anonymous superhero fighting street-level threats in New York City without the safety net of his past resources. Without any friends or loved ones, he lives an isolated life and is forced to rely solely on himself until a powerful new enemy arrives on the scene and changes everything. At CinemaCon, Sony’s head, Tom Rothman, hyped the film, calling it "as big as anything we’ve ever made," yet said it feels "like nothing we’ve ever made." He also mentioned that the film is Tom Holland's "finest performance," before playing a pre-recorded message from the actor. The 29-year-old Holland spoke about the film, adding that it is "big and fun and cool… the most emotional Spider-Man, and in some ways, the most grown-up."
In addition to Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Jacob Batalon reprises his role as Ned Leeds, and Zendaya plays Michelle 'MJ' Jones-Watson. The title also features Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle / The Punisher, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan / Scorpion, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk. Trammell Tillman and Sadie Sink join as the newest additions to the film, with the 'Severance' star playing Bill and Sink's role being kept under wraps for now. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously collaborated with Marvel on the 2021 film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' will swing into theaters across the United States on July 31.
