'Spiderman: Brand New Day' trailer hints at presence of X-Men's Rogue - everything we know so far
The recently released trailer for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' reiterates that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't entirely run out of new ideas. Pairing the webslinging superhero with Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle (i.e., The Punisher) and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk, the trailer consistently hints at a fundamental change in Peter Parker's DNA. Several villains are also introduced without ceremony, including Boomerang, The Hand, Tarantula, and Scorpion.
There's also the mysterious fiend, played by 'Stranger Things' star Sadie Sink, who is seen surrounded by computers, jumping from one person to another, and seemingly controlling them. One might speculate that the character is Jean Grey, also known as Marvel Girl. Marvel, however, has yet to officially confirm this. By far, the most far-reaching hint dropped by the 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer lies elsewhere.
When the webslinger tries to frantically stop a military vehicle while also trying his best to prevent The Punisher from killing its driver, Spider-Man is thrown into a chase. At one point, he slams heavily against the window of a bus. While the camera is inside the vehicle, we see Spidey spread out across the window on the outside, and an indifferent woman sits in the passenger seat, oblivious to the action outside.
She is seen wearing a headset and has prominent white hair. This little snippet has sparked widespread speculation that the trailer hints at Rogue's arrival in the MCU. Rogue was introduced in 1981 on 'X-Men' and has gone through several visual depictions over the years, yet her iconic white bangs set against brunette hair and a green-and-white color-blocked costume remain instantly recognizable. It is interesting to note that both elements are hinted at in the trailer.
Rogue has the unique ability to steal the memories and powers of anyone she happens to touch. Although Marvel hasn't officially confirmed whether Rogue appears in the upcoming movie, the studio previously announced its intention to reboot the X-Men. As of this writing, the chances of the mysterious figure being Rogue seem to be quite slim. Regardless, foreshadowing the introduction of Rogue in such a manner might add to Marvel's sense of intricate worldbuilding. Only time will tell.
On the other hand, the official synopsis of the upcoming movie reads, "Four years have passed since the events of 'No Way Home,' and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he's devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced." 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' releases in theatres on July 31.
