LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Despite being set 100 years in the future, 'The Ark' is actually presenting the oldest type of story—that of survival. Being in outer space with insufficient resources has always been a key source of terror for humans, even from the time we first emerged from our caves and boarded boats. Science fiction programs like 'Lost in Space', 'Battlestar Galactica', and the upcoming 'The Ark' simply take that anxiety and push it to the logical limit of being really "out there."

Dean Devlin, the creator and producer of 'Independence Day' and 'Stargate', developed 'The Ark'. Along with Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson of Electric Entertainment, Devlin and 'Stargate SG-1' creator Jonathan Glassner will serve as co-showrunners and executive produce. The producers are Steve Lee and Jonathan English.

'The Ark' brings a simple, yet horrifying situation to the table. Per the official Syfy synopsis: “The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race. The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life. With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies, and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.“

What is the buzz around 'The Ark'?

With the premiere of the show getting closer and closer, the creators of the show released a sneak peek on SYFY showing the first five minutes of the series which has left its audience with a lot of questions.

"What people care most about is the characters," Devlin recently told SYFY WIRE about the series. "Do they relate to them? Are they unique? Are they surprising? Are they compelling? Do I love them? Do I hate them? And yes, our plots are important, and the stories are important, but it's always secondary to the characters. So the trick is trying to make a diverse group of people who think differently, who act differently, who talk differently. And then to find actors who are compelling; people you want to watch week after week."
