I mean, it's my grandma's song, can't get much closer to the heart than your own blood". 'The Voice' coaches compare Asher HaVon's 'Grammy moment' to Whitney Houston
'The Voice' singer Asher HaVon, who is from Selma, Alabama, advanced to the Live Shows and received high accolades from Coach Reba McEntire during the show's Playoffs. On the April 29 edition of 'The Voice', Asher, one of six surviving members of Team Reba sang David Guetta's 2011 song 'Titanium'.
The original song contained Sia's vocals, but Asher was unafraid of the challenge of matching her. 'In the Heights' star Anthony Ramos who served as a mentor said, "Asher's voice is otherworldly. He makes it look so easy. He’s effortless."
During rehearsals, Anthony suggested that Asher strip down his cover and perform an acoustic ballad. Reba recommended dividing the difference and starting the performance that way, with the instruments coming in later, rising, and building to a strong finale.
Asher killed his performance while wearing a suit with a long white train, and the coaches couldn't stop praising him. "Every artist throughout their career, has their staple performance. I think of Adele at the Grammys," Dan+Shay's Shay Mooney explained. "This felt like a Grammy moment for you, man," he added.
"It feels important when you sing. I feel like you have a strong chance of winning this entire show," said Dan Smyers, and the coach pair joked that they hoped Asher would remember them when they attempt to buy tickets to his arena concert one day.
"There are certain things about you that remind me of Whitney Houston. She would take these songs that weren't written for a soul singer and have that restraint and regal presence on the sound but also throw in a dope run that you would hear in church," remarked John Legend, who compared the performance to a religious experience.
“In church, we save a descriptor for certain vessels, we say they’re anointed. I just felt that anointing on you. That was divine.” When Reba announced the three members of her team that would advance to Lives, it was virtually a given that Asher would be the first to leave. He will be accompanied by his colleagues, L Rodgers and Josh Sanders. "Asher brought it tonight," Reba explained. "He could sing the phone book and make it a hit."
