Cybercrimes have been on the rise. Even more now, as the dependency on online platforms and digital channels continues to increase with people in quarantine around the world. The upcoming episode of ‘Tommy’ comes at such an appropriate time, taking us through the case of the day that will deal with something similar.

Episode 8 ‘The Swatting Game’ will see LAPD chief Abigail Thomas aka Tommy hunting down a cybercriminal. The perpetrator is targeting all officers at the Los Angeles PD and doxxing them.

If you are unfamiliar with these hacking terms, here’s a piece of quick info. Swatting is a tactic often used by criminals to deceive the police or emergency services by faking calls to 911 and sending the response team to wrong addresses or locations. The objective of such hoaxing could be either mere harassment or to mislead the police from a potential investigation.

Doxxing, on the other hand, is simply hacking personal profiles and publishing them online. The hackers often trace down personal details and sensitive information of random online users or targeted individuals on the internet and publish their information across various channels. The objective here is to either harass them, or more malicious intent, driven mostly towards public figures, people of law and order, or celebrities.

In the upcoming episode, we will see Tommy dealing with both these pressing issues as the criminal continues to harass some of her staff members, pushing them to resign, and also a rising online gamer. The preview clip shows Tommy investing all her departmental resources to scour and hunt down the perpetrator and stop him from exposing the personal details of her officers.

Elsewhere, we will also see Chief Thomas facing the aftermath of her public statement against a shooting that left a negative impression on the department’s optics and of course, on Thomas’s image. While she races with her team to stop a crime spreading far and wide across the web, she also needs to finds a way to fix the crisis within her department.

Will Tommy manage to put an end to both before it’s too late? ‘Tommy’ Episode 8 airs on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at 10 pm/9c on the CBS.
