What happened in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 2?
Episode 2 of 'The Sympathizer' starts with The Captain, The General, and Bốn getting on the plane to the United States of America where they have to stay at a refugee camp in poor living conditions.
The Captain finds a way out of the camp with the help of Professor Hammer (Robert Downey Jr.) who he knows from his time in America as a student. Professor introduces the Captain to his secretary Ms. Mori (Sandra Oh), whom he ends up having an affair with. The Captain also finds a way out of the camp for the General as they relocate to South California.
The General asks the captain to check for a potential spy around him and asks the Captain to look for the spy. The Captain pins the blame on Major Oanh (Phanxinê) as the General asks him to kill Major Oanh.
Bốn is dealing with the death of his wife and child and lives with the Captain who takes care of him. He is a man with nothing to lose and the Captain convinces him to do the killing for him.
What to expect in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 3?
The upcoming episode is going to be about the choice that the Captain faces. The second episodes end with the Captain sending a coded message to his North Vietnam associates asking whether he should kill the Major.
If he had to kill Major Oanh in the next episode, he would have to move away from a statement he made in the second episode while he was being interviewed. He claimed that he had never killed anyone.
If the Captain makes Bốn kill Major Oanh, he will be guilty of using Bốn's suffering to commit a murder. The Captain's character arc thus far has shown him to be a sympathetic individual, so there is a possibility of him saving the innocent Major Oanh from death too.
The next episode will further dwell on his life away from home in America. The second episode also planted the seeds of some chemistry between the Captain and General's daughter. The makers might look to explore that relationship too.
