LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Golden Raspberry Awards are not new to controversies and they have been labeled irrelevant by many. But they always manage to nab everyone’s eyeballs by releasing a list of nominations that shocks everyone. This year was no different and saw Andrew Dominik’s ‘Blonde’ leading the list with eight nods, including Worst Picture and Worst Director. However, the Razzies has hit a new low by nominating a 12-year-old actor named Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the Worst Actress category. Fans are angry at the organization for ruining the young girl’s confidence.

Since their launch in 1981, the Golden Raspberry Awards have positioned themselves as the anti-Academy Awards and recognize the worst movies and performances in a calendar year. At first, they enjoyed the distinction of actually recognizing bad performances and movies, but in recent years, they have lost a lot of things, including people’s respect. In recent years, the awards committee of the Razzies has taken a lot of missteps, and this year, they have just made it worse for themselves.

The Razzies released the final list of nominees for this year’s event and selected the 12-year-old actor from ‘Firestarter’ for Worst Actress, along with Diane Keaton (‘Mack & Rita’), Bryce Dallas Howard (‘Jurassic World: Dominion’), Alicia Silverstone (‘The Requin’), and Kaya Scodelario (‘The King’s Daughter’). Even when viewers believe that some of the names in the list deserve this recognition, the inclusion of Armstrong in the list has made everyone angry. Social media didn’t shy away from expressing disappointment over Armstrong’s nomination and slammed the awards for such a disgraceful act.

One of the social media users wrote, “The razzies are already mean-spirited & classless, but to nominate a kid is just repulsive & wrong. Why put a kid at risk of increased bullying or worse? Be better.” Another social media user tweeted, “Ryan Kiera Armstrong is a very talented and brilliant young actress! Her future is bright and the sky is the limit!” Another social media user noted, “The Razzies are a bunch of bullies.”

“The Razzies nominating Ryan Kiera Armstrong for "Worst Actress" is so completely ignorant and cynical that I can't wrap my head around it. They have no clue what this can do to a child actress who probably considered her starring role in FIRESTARTER as a high point in her life,” tweeted another user. “I’m not fond of #TheRazzies at the best of times. But hearing that they nominated Ryan Kiera Armstrong for ‘Worst Actress’ seriously irks me. She’s a brilliant young actress, and though I haven’t seen Firestarter, I’d still be willing to bet she isn’t the issue with that film,” wrote another one.

Another user said, “The Razzies are gross, cynical trash and this year they’ve decided to bully a child.” Another social media user tweeted, “This business is already notoriously hard on children. For the Razzies to nominate a child to be ridiculed essentially is unbelievably cruel. These are terrible people and I don’t see how anyone could view this any other way.”

This is not the first time that the Razzies have nominated a young actor in a category. In 2000, the Golden Raspberry Foundation nominated Jake Lloyd in the Worst Supporting Actor category for playing Young Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 movie ‘Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace’. He was only 10 years of age when he received the nod. On the other hand, ‘Home Alone’ fame Macaulay Culkin was nominated for the Worst Actor accolade for three different movies in 1995. He was 15 at the time.

Last year, they faced a lot of flak for introducing the category ‘Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in 2021 Movie’. The criticism got so huge that they rescinded it after the actor’s family revealed that the ‘Die Hard’ star was suffering from a neurological order and won’t be acting in films.
