'The Purge' season 2: Release date, plot, cast, trailer, and everything you need to know about the days leading up to the deadly night

The prime focus of season 2 will be in digging deeper into what happens on the other 364 days leading up to the deadly day every year
UPDATED JUL 31, 2019

Because 'The Purge' movie franchise wasn't enough for fans of gory horror, producer Jason Blum decided to gift them with an entire show of the same name, that just finished its debut run. And while people in the UK are still going through the first season that was released on Amazon Prime Videos UK, here's even better news: a second season is already on the way! The controversial theme of the film had raised many alarms because of its violent tone where all crimes are made legal for 12 continuous hours in an alternate universe, and the series continues with the same. So without further ado, here's all you need to know about the upcoming season 2 of 'The Purge'.

Release date

While an official release date hasn't been announced yet, Blum did let fans know via a tweet that we can expect a fall 2019 premiere on the USA Network. "James DeMonaco (creator) has done it again: the propulsive and compelling story he created for season one of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way. We are thrilled to embark on season two and can't wait to bring more of James' vision to USA and fans of The Purge," Blum tweeted.

Plot

According to the official synopsis of the show, the series revolves around "a 12-hour period when all crime, including vandalism, murder, arson, and theft, is legal, set in the alternate United States ruled by a totalitarian government." The characters are usually unconnected, but it is always a game of survivors against attackers, with each party coming together as one to fight the other.

Season 2 will kick off after the Purge night from season 1 and explore how that single night changed everything in the lives of the four interconnected main characters over the course of the year that follows, leading up to the next Purge. The prime focus of season 2 will be in digging deeper into what happens the other 364 days leading up to the deadly day every year.

Creator

The series has been executive produced by the film franchise creator, James DeMonaco, who served the same role in season 1. Sébastien K. Lemercier, Krystal Houghton Ziv, James Roland, Tim Andrew, and Jason Blum serve as executive produce alongside DeMonaco. The series is a co-production between Blumhouse Television and UCP (Universal Content Productions).

Reprising their roles from the previous season, Derek Luke of '13 Reasons Why' will play the accomplished Marcus Moore, whose seemingly perfect life with a loving wife is ruined to pieces when an assassin attacks his home. Max Martini from 'Pacific Rim' plays the laser-focused Ryan Grant, gearing up and prepping for his annual Purge heist. Paola Nuñez will return as the top NFFA surveillance center employee, Esme, who is invested in spotting crimes and tagging lawbreakers online, and Joel Allen will play Ben, whose life changes forever after he goes out on Purge night for the first time.
