'The Order' Season 2: Lilith deserved better, will Season 3 deliver her best storyline yet?
Spoilers for Season 2 of 'The Order'
At the onset, Netflix's 'The Order' seems like a mashup of any other supernatural show, especially 'The Magicians' and 'Teen Wolf'. What makes 'The Order' stand out are the unique characters and their sense of humor. One of those characters is Lilith Bathory, played by the indigenous Canadian actress, Devery Jacobs. Lilith is one of the members of the Knights of Saint Christopher, a group of students at Belgrave University who were chosen by werewolf hides to protect humanity against evil magic. She was also formerly a medicum of the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, the titular secret magical society on campus.
Due to Lilith's penchant for blood, she is also known as Killith, but we have also come to know her softer side. She's a tough, no-nonsense comrade to Jack Morton (Jake Manley), Hamish Duke (Thomas Elms), and Randall Carpio (Adam DiMarco). Lilith, who has taken on the werewolf hide of Timber, is the most aggressive and short-tempered of the Knights. She also does not trust easily and is extremely dedicated to fighting evil magic. Though Lilith has a deep contempt for magic, she grows to like it more when she remembers she was in the Order.
In the second season, Lilith becomes a member of the Order again. While her memories were wiped, her acolyte handler was Nicole (Anesha Bailey). She grew closer to Nicole and even asks her out multiple times. Nicole seems to be the more moral member of the acolytes assigned to monitor the Knights and so, she evades. In the previous season, we had seen Lilith grow closer to Randall — they even shared a kiss before their memories were erased by the Order. When the Knights' memories come back, this causes discomfort between Lilith and Randall — Randall wants to pick up where they left off, but her feelings for Nicole are genuine.
Just as we were excited that there was going to be LGBTQ couple on the otherwise lily-white, homogenous show, Lilith is sucked into the demon dimension in the fourth episode of the second season. We don't see Lilith again until the final episode.
While it seems like some exciting storylines await Lilith in the next season, we were disappointed that a character who is a bisexual person of color was missing for most of the second season — giving more space to the straight, white characters of the show. Admittedly, we got to see Nicole a bit more, but this was in relation to her guilt over Lilith's disappearance — we don't really know who Nicole is outside of her relationship with Lilith.
When Lilith comes back, she looks like a demon and asks the other Knights to send her back to her "home." Does this mean that Lilith is a full-blown demon now? After what the Knights had to do to bring her back, how will they respond to who Lilith is now? Moreover, with Lilith being a demon, what happens to Timber?
Clearly, this sets up a unique plotline for Season 3 if 'The Order' is renewed. We hope, however, that Lilith is not disposed of. Whether she continues to be a demon or goes back to her werewolf-human self, we hope that the writers treat her better than they did in the second season. Alyssa Drake (Sarah Grey) got far more development than Lilith, and we can't help but wonder whether Lilith was pushed aside for Alyssa's sake. Now that Alyssa is dead, can we expect more screentime for Lilith?
All episodes of Season 2 of 'The Order' are now streaming on Netflix.
