'The Bachelorette’: Was Tayshia and Ivan’s BLM discussion ‘performative’? Internet says 'keep politics out'

'I’m convinced ABC gave Ivan this George Floyd script in a scrambled effort to suddenly align this historically Caucasian-led show with Black issues'

Tayshia Adams had a new challenge for a group of men on 'The Bachelorette'. The challenge was to write a love song for her and perform it. The winning prize was some one on one time with her. Ivan was declared the winner and even though the internet was having a great time watching the romance unfold between him and Tayshia initially, it all came crashing when their date took a surprising turn and things started to get too serious.

Ivan began to open up about how much of a family guy he is. After talking about his parents, Ivan brought up his younger brother and his run-in with the law. His brother had gotten into the habit of using drugs and alcohol and it got to a point where he had to spend four years in prison. However, that was not the end of his problems. He was subjected to a lot of racism while in there and Ivan opened up about how much it hurt him to know that his brother had gone through all of that. He also brought up George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement that spread like wildfire globally in the wake of Floyd's death, and how much importance it held for him given someone from his family had faced racism.

The interaction seemed quite genuine and it was obvious that Ivan was speaking from his heart and Tayshia too was reduced to tears. However, fans feel this whole conversation about the BLM movement was performative and a lot of them slammed ABC for using this for entertainment.

"I am SHOCKED they are talking about BLM on a Bachelor franchise show. Actually shocked. I’d say props to them but everything they do is performative (that’s why I’m Team MTV) ANYWAY happy this is happening on the show regardless #TheBachelorette," wrote a fan. "The Bachelorette lost me as a viewer. The next thing you know these contestants will bash Trump and that doesn’t fly with me," wrote another. "Keep politics out of it please! #TheBachelorette," wrote another. "I’m convinced ABC gave Ivan this George Floyd script in a scrambled effort to suddenly align this historically Caucasian-led show with Black issues. #TheBachelorette #BacheloretteABC #bachelorette" tweeted another.
