Being a superhero is serious business, as Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) learns in the third episode of 'Stargirl'. After defeating Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), and paralyzing him, Courtney goes up against Icicle, another member of the Injustice Society Of America. Icicle is a cold (no pun intended) and angry man, and we're given a little insight into his origin story at the beginning of the episode.

He lost his wife and is left to raise a child alone — a reason enough for him to turn to the dark side, apparently. And so through the course of the episode, he has an icy (the terrible puns just don't stop) encounter with Stargirl and emerges as the victor while Stargirl is left flummoxed.  This fight isn't pretty and even has a casualty, as Courtney loses her close friend Joey.

Icicle carefully orchestrates and plans his death, and the rest of us just watch limply as Joey's cards fly in the air. Icicle is not done yet and has more things sinister things planned. Obviously, villains are not going to be fighting with Stargirl individually like an old Hollywood film and they're well on their way to collectively taking her down. Hourman is on his way too, and the danger levels are just escalating further.

Courtney needs all the help that she can get to take on the entire gang of villains. There's only so much that her Cosmic Staff can do, and it's clearly no match against Icicle either.  For the first time, her confidence is shaken a little. There is always collateral damage and now she needs to rethink her next few steps and not assume that it's all a game.

Courtney learns a lesson or two about being a superhero and realizes that the job isn't all that's cracked up to be. Hate to quote old Ben Parker, but it's true, with great power, comes great responsibility, along with some terrifying and sinister villains. Things are just going to take a darker turn for here, perhaps not as dark as the other Arrowverse shows, but well, we never know. There are many more villains and offsprings who will join hands, and who just want to tear her down.

'Stargirl' airs on The CW on Tuesdays at 8 pm.
