'Star Trek: Picard' is on the horizon and the excitement in the air for Trekkies is palpable. Recently, CBS unveiled the trailer for 'Children of Mars' as part of the Short Treks. This episode is expected to connect Picard in a rather unusual way, and it will be interesting to see how.

CBS All Access is rather tight-lipped on the connections though. The video that was released, shows the story behind Kima and Lil, two twelve-year-olds who engage in constant clashes and finally become friends just before their lives change forever.

There has been much speculation on whether Picard will be a continuation to 'Star Trek: Next Generation'. However executive producer Akiva Goldsman has asserted that this will not be the case. In an interview to Hollywood Outbreak, he said, "Well we pointedly wanted to not make a sequel to Next Gen. I think that tonally, it's a little bit of a hybrid. Obviously it’s – you will see, I hope – slower, more gentle, more lyrical. It is certainly more character-based."

He added, "It takes on the same thing that the original series took on, 'Next Gen' took on, and 'Discovery' took on. Star Trek remains aspirational and what we get to do that DS9 got to do a little bit and Discovery got to do is to tell serialized stories, and in serialized storytelling, the characters can evolve in a way that makes it unique. So we think it's a new kind of Star Trek show, made by a lot of people who love all the old kinds of Star Trek," he said.

'Star Trek: Picard' shows a retired Jean-Luc Picard in France, after cutting all ties with the Federation due to some unpleasant truths he had uncovered years ago, on a mission. Nevertheless, he is brought back into the fold and decides to step up and embrace what the Federation actually stood for.

The show will premiere on January 23 on CBS.
