LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Set in the 17th century, FX's 'Shōgun' transports viewers to the chaotic political realm of feudal Japan, where power struggles are at their zenith.

The series, which was based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, provided an exciting look into a society that valued tradition, honor, and violent combat.

The show revolves around John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an Englishman, who chooses to serve Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a rival for supreme control in Japan, as a strategy for securing his survival.

However, what initially appears as an unremarkable start to the series suddenly takes a dramatic, with characters meeting untimely deaths, battles raging, and alliances being forged.

Now, let's examine the characters from 'Shōgun' who died in the first season.

Toda Mariko

Fans are undoubtedly devastated by the untimely death of Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), as the elegant woman had earned a special place in their hearts.

Mariko was raised with a profound sense of duty and loyalty to her clan, hailing from an aristocratic family with a rich history.

However, her life takes a drastic turn when her entire clan is slaughtered, and accused of the assassination of the former daimyo, Lord Kuroda Nobuhisa (Eijiro Ozaki).

She had always wanted to end her life due to her overwhelming despair, but when she meets Blackthorne, a ray of hope begins to shine through.

Despite being married to Toda Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe), she finds herself unable to resist her attraction to the Englishman and ultimately engages in a physical relationship with him.

Toranaga assigns her a mission that ends in her death due to the dubious Ishido's defection, but she succeeds in winning Ochiba-no-kata's (Fumi Nikaido's) support for her Lord.

Mariko's death profoundly impacts the series' plot, as it sends shockwaves through Blackthorne, foils Ishido's schemes, and secures Toranaga Ochiba's backing.

Kashigi Yabushige

Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) is a complicated and intriguing character stuck between worlds.

It was evident from the outset of the series that Yabushige might betray Toranaga at any moment, but this wasn't revealed until episode 9, when he anticipates Toranaga's downfall and chooses to ally with Ishido, resulting in Mariko's death.

In the final episode, Yabushige is stunned to learn of Mariko's death, as he had anticipated her arrest instead

Later, he was forced to commit seppuku, and right before his death, Toranaga admits that the whole plan was orchestrated by him to win Ochiba's support, confusing Yabushige.

Toranaga bestows the honor of seppuku upon Yabushige, marking the conclusion of his character's journey in the show. Yabushige's character delves into the significance of loyalty and challenges blind allegiance.

Toda Hiromatsu

One of the most heroic deaths of the season can undoubtedly be attributed to Toda Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka), Toranaga's close confidant and strategist.

Hiromatsu, who had a brilliant strategic mind and played an important part in developing Toranaga's plans and maneuvering him into power, objected when Toranaga chose to submit to Ishido.

Hiromatsu and Toranaga got into a furious disagreement, and Hiromatsu begged his Lord to reconsider.

In an unexpected turn of events, Hiromatsu performed seppuku in front of Toranaga and his men, viewing the surrender as dishonorable and a betrayal of their values.

However, a deeper purpose for his death was subsequently revealed when Toranaga told Mariko that by committing seppuku, Hiromatsu hoped to strengthen Toranaga's surrender story and deceive Ishido.

Thanks to Hiromatsu's sacrifice, Toranaga found himself in a more advantageous position compared to Ishido.

Yoshii Nagakado

Toranaga's impulsive son, Yoshii Nagakado (Yuki Kura), had a vital part in the story, although a shorter one than some of the other characters.

The irresponsible young guy was the one who used the freedom to launch an assault on Ishido's man, Nebara Jozen (Nobuya Shimamoto).

Then, disillusioned and angered by Toranaga's apparent surrender to Ishido, he embarked on a reckless expedition.

Acting on impulse, he launched a surprise assault against Toranaga's half-brother, Saeki Nobutatsu (Eita Okuno). However, things take a tragic turn as he slips and falls, hitting his head on a rock and succumbing to his injuries.

On the other hand, Toranaga benefits from his death as it grants him additional time to negotiate his surrender.

Sugiyama Josui

The Christian Daimyo and one of the five Regents on the Council of Regents at Osaka Castle, Sugiyama Josui (Toshi Toda), resisted Ishido's brutal methods by adhering to his values of honor and tradition.

Sugiyama refused to vote for Toranaga's impeachment, despite persuasion from the other regents and Ishido, out of concern that such an action would harm the young heir.

Given Sugiyama's steadfast resistance, Ishido's man ambushes and murders him as he attempts to depart Osaka Castle.

After hearing of Sugiyama's murder, Toranaga realized the extent of Ishido's ambition, which fueled his resolve to confront them head-on.

Nebara Jozen

Ishido's loyal retainer and longtime friend of Yabushige Nebra was a fierce samurai warrior who played a brief but crucial role in the series.

Yashibuge welcomes the Nebra, who has come out to check on Toranaga's assault strategy.

However, events take a dramatic turn when the impulsive Nagakado launches a covert assault on the Nebra, betraying him and leading to the series' first gruesome fatality.

His death catalyzed the escalation of hostilities between Ishido and Toranaga, as it emphasized the situation's combustible nature and the possibility of future carnage.
