LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: With each episode, FX's 'Shōgun' sends viewers into a frenzy with edge-of-seat surprises and sad fatalities.

As seen in the series' latest episode, fan-favorite Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) finally served her purpose according to Lord Yoshii Toranaga's (Hiroyuki Sanada) clever strategy.

However, in a startling change of events, she decides to sacrifice herself to protect others, but the episode ends abruptly, leaving viewers wondering if she is indeed dead. 

What happened with Toda Mariko in 'Shōgun' Episode 9?

The episode was a cat-and-mouse game in which it was revealed that Mariko had indeed survived after declaring her seppuku. However, things take a sharp turn when Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira) sends men to assassinate her.

However, the episode ends abruptly, leaving fans unsure of Mariko's fate. Nothing about Mariko's death is established, and the truth will be revealed in the last episode, as it is possible that she suffered serious injuries but lived.

Mariko is a fan-favorite character and a vital part of Toranaga's strategy. Furthermore, Toranaga may have predicted the attack and devised a strategy to save her just in time.

As such, there's a chance she survived the horrific attack and will return to serve her Lord Toranaga.

Fans have been filled with grief and fury following Mariko's untimely death, with many sharing their thoughts on X. 

An emotional admirer shared their thoughts on Mariko's tragic end and campaigned for renaming the show as a tribute to Mariko, saying, "Can we just change the show name from Shōgun to Mariko-sama!?" An admirer praised Anna Sawai's performance in the episode and said, "Incredible episode of Shōgun. Give Anna Sawai all the awards."



 



 

Another added, "One of the best performances from a female actress this year. Anna Sawai’s portrayal of Toda Mariko was nothing short of perfection. The shining soul of episode 9 as she fulfilled her lord’s command and died a martyr. She’s coming for that best actress emmy." "I will NOT ACCEPT! MARIKO! NOOOO! I can't with this show. I can see why it is kind of like Game of the Thrones. I'm heartbroken. Thank you Anna Sawai for giving Mariko life," said a heartbroken fan.

From the beginning of the series, it was clear that Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) and trust could not coexist, but no one could have guessed that his betrayal would cost Mariko her life.

Sharing the same sentiment, a fan said, "Can't belive Yabushige cost Mariko Sama her life ... Ah Ishido you will never know peace in this Shogun .. F*****g Yabushige switching sides every episode." What is the plot of 'Shōgun'?

The historical story revolves around an English pilot named John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who inadvertently becomes engaged in the political sphere of medieval Japan.

Later, he is enlisted by the strong and crafty Lord Toranaga to unify Japan.

However, things are not as simple as they appear, as the plot to grab ultimate control has unintended effects, including terrible sacrifices and many twists and turns.
