'Shameless' Season 11 Episode 1 Preview: Will Ian and Mickey last? Marriage is not for the OG Gallavich couple

We apologize for being the harbinger of news so forboding and dreary, but Ian and Mickey simply cannot come to, let alone be on the same page.

There's no point just jumping to marriage, and the disaster-ridden relationship that was Fiona and Gus's is proof of that. One would think Ian took some insightful lessons for that, but nope. He and Mickey, despite their many fights and clashes, decided to tie the knot simply to enjoy spousal privilege at first, and later, because love triumphs over everything. But is that the case? Since day 1, marriage seems to be not the end goal for the couple, who - as the trailer hints - are having a hard time at making ends meet or even seeing eye to eye for that matter. Things get so bad that we worry Ian and Mickey might be able to make it till the end of the series finale after all!

We apologize for being the harbinger of news so forboding and dreary, but Ian and Mickey simply cannot come to, let alone be on the same page. Be it for Mickey's outrageous drinking habits, or his reluctance to get a job, or even his absolute denial that life must change now that they are a married couple. That they have to grow up is something Mickey refuses to acknowledge, thus bringing about all the further clashes in his six-month-old marriage to the love of his life, Ian.

Ian, working in retail, is sick of his husband's expenses - be it on beers or hookers. On one hand, he is tied of Mickey breaking into their wedding gift money to carry on his philandering, but on the other hand, he isn't quite sure where he stands on polygamy himself. Ian and Mickey have ever been one of those couples putting physical intimacy at the top of their list of commitment priorities, but their troubles run just beyond that. Mickey is fine with sleeping around, and even though he doesn't admit how he feels about Ian sleeping around, the redheaded Gallagher is not fine with his husband sleeping around. It's not fair, as Mickey points out, but neither is the million other liberties Mickey takes, for example practically stealing and wasting the money that now technically belongs to both of them as a married couple.

This is what happens when marriage is approached without discussions preceding such a gigantic step and Mickey and Ian, although goals as TV's finest LGBTQ couple, are facing more realistic problems with marriage. It's not all sunshine and butterflies for them, and they have reconciled so many times after so many ordeals; whether this is something they will be able to overcome is yet to be seen and the odds don't look good, or even in their favour.

'Shameless' Season 11 premiers on Sunday, December 6, at 9 PM only on Showtime.
