The movie will be focusing on Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes whom we last saw barely clinging to dear life aboard a helicopter bound for parts unknown. In fact, the plan is to focus on doing a trilogy surrounding Rick.
UPDATED JUL 20, 2019

A new teaser trailer for the upcoming 'The Walking Dead' movie, starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, dropped at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.  New cast members were also announced for the hit zombie series and its upcoming second spin-off and that's not all. During the show's panel at the SDCC actress Danai Gurira also confirmed that she would be exiting the franchise after the tenth season. A trailer for Season 10 was also released while Season 6 of 'Fear the Walking Dead' was confirmed.  With all this information, AMC sure loves to keep its fans on their toes.

Coming to the movie, it will be focusing on Grimes whom we last saw barely clinging to dear life aboard a helicopter bound for parts unknown. Grimes's further adventures are going to be told in a series of movies on AMC.

The short teaser doesn’t provide much information beyond confirmation that the movies are indeed happening and that Grimes is truly the focus of the story. The entire teaser consists of just one shot of a helicopter heading towards the darkened skyline of a city.

According to Collider, franchise architect Scott Gimple said, “It is really important for the audience to know that we are going to be continuing to tell the story of Rick Grimes in these AMC Studios original films.”

“We don’t want this thing to be like, ‘Oh, well, he’ll be back on the show any moment now’,” he added. “We are telling Rick’s story in another medium, and it’s going to be these AMC Studios original films. They’re going to be on AMC, most probably. They’re centered around Rick Grimes. We’re going to tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight, and these are going to be big, epic entertainments. Each are quality films. That’s what’s been happening in the industry. We’ve seen Netflix make these, basically, studio films for people to watch in their homes, and we’re going to be doing the same sort of thing here.”

Gimple also confirmed that the plan is to do a trilogy surrounding Rick. He also revealed that while that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only Rick Grimes stories that are going to be told, “they’re probably not going to be the only movies that we tell”.

“The Rick Grimes story, of course, is the biggest thing that we’re doing right off the bat, but we’re going to be doing a number of different Walking Dead things over the next few years,” Gimple said. “A universe of stuff. We’re not going to release it all at once. We’re going to be putting things out over the years for maximum effect. We don’t want to overwhelm folks with it.”
