Tom, a struggling con man in New York, relies on his deceitful talents like forgery and impersonation to survive. When Herbert Greenleaf, a wealthy shipbuilder, asks Tom to bring back his son Dickie from Italy, Tom sees an opportunity to enter a life of luxury.
He locates Dickie and becomes fixated on befriending him and immersing himself in his lavish lifestyle. However, Tom's plans face a challenge from Marge, Dickie's close friend who is also in love with him.
The official synopsis reads, "Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home.
