Contains spoilers and speculations for 'Presumed Innocent'

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The seventh episode of Apple TV+'s 'Presumed Innocent' was quite an eventful one for Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), who is hell-bent on implicating Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the murder case of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve).

However, the episode's concluding minutes throw a dark shadow over Tommy's intentions as it shows that his home is broken into and trashed.

This sudden event resulted in an unexpected revelation that changed the course of the show as the murder weapon, a fireplace poker, coupled with an insulting letter was found in his home.

Nevertheless, there is one more suspect who has all of the motives and goals to kill Carolyn and has been going under the radar from the starting of the show.

Who is the new suspect in Carolyn Polhemus's murder in 'Presumed Innocent?'

It is undeniable that there were similarities between the murder cases of Carolyn and Bunny Davis and the prominent one has to be the manner both dead bodies were tied up.

This indicates that the killer was aware of details of the Bunny Davis case that were not widely known and one such person is Herbert Kumagai (James Hiroyuki Liao).

Kumagai, the medical examiner, would have been aware of these data and has a history of falsifying autopsy results. When Rusty challenged him about the Bunny Davis case, he unexpectedly provided proof of Rusty's DNA beneath Carolyn's nails, which were nowhere to be found at the show's start.

The fireplace poker that appears at Molto's house with a message reading 'Go F**k Yourself', the same words Kumagai used with Rusty earlier in the show, is the most obvious indication of Kumagai's involvement.

What could be the reason behind Kumagai killing Carolyn Polhemus in 'Presumed Innocent?'

The first episode of 'Presumed Innocent' hinted to a possible relationship between Carolyn Polhemus and Bunny Davis' murder case (@appletv+)

A flashback reveals that Carolyn was aware of a second DNA sample in the Bunny Davis case, which if revealed could point out Kumagai's incompetence.

Suppose Carolyn had alerted authorities about Kumagai's blunder. In that case, it may have affected his reputation and jeopardized his career, and in order to conceal his error, Kumagai may have killed Carolyn, as Bunny Davis did.

Furthermore, we've witnessed enmity between Rusty and Kumagai, as both men despised one other, which may have provided the medical examiner a motive to accuse him of Carolyn's murder.

He might have sought to bring down Rusty by putting evidence such as Rusty's DNA beneath Carolyn's nails, leveraging Rusty and Carolyn's affair to make the claim more convincing.

Overall, with just one episode remaining to premiere on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, we will finally know who murdered Carolyn.
