CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Set against the backdrop of a mysterious murder case in Chicago, Apple TV+'s 'Presumed Innocent' immerses viewers in a world of skepticism and intrigue, where the killer of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve) remains undiscovered.

The creative brainchild of David E Kelley, the show follows Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), a prominent prosecutor whose life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes the prime suspect in the brutal murder of his secret girlfriend and colleague, Carolyn.

Rusty is compelled to defend his innocence, navigating the treacherous justice system that he once dominated.

But his journey to justice is far from straightforward, as Carolyn's son, Michael Caldwell (Tate Birchmore), is confident Rusty is guilty of his mother's murder, and his testimony in court perfectly suggests why.

From the beginning of the show, it's clear that Carolyn's son, Michael, harbors distrust towards Rusty, frequently expressing suspicions about his involvement in the murder case.

However, his latest courtroom testimony leaves no doubt: Michael is convinced that Rusty is responsible for his mother's murder.

Tommy invites Michael to the witness stand towards the end of the last episode, hoping that his testimony will incriminate Rusty.

However, Michael's emotional reaction reveals a strained relationship with his mother, who had rejected him from her life.

He insists that Rusty murdered her, but his conviction lacks solid evidence. The court instructs Michael to state his observations without presenting them as facts.

Michael admits he wasn't close to his mother, but he recalls her mentioning two weeks before her death that she was having issues with a colleague at work, possibly the same man she was involved with romantically.

Michael's claim was refuted when a coworker testified that Carolyn had never complained about Rusty. Instead, it was revealed that she had complained against Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard).

While Rusty may be a suspect in Carolyn's murder, Michael's unreliable claims lead me to believe that Rusty is innocent.

Michael's resentment towards Rusty appears connected to his feelings of abandonment by his mother.

He is a troubled child who likely craves his mother's love, but feels neglected, leaving his emotions vulnerable.

When he witnessed his mother laughing and enjoying herself with Rusty, he likely harbored animosity towards him.

Overall, Michael's testimony against Rusty hinges solely on his animosity towards the man he perceives as taking away his mother.
