Netflix gears up to debut its first Egyptian drama, 'Paranormal', an adaptation of the series of novels by late Egyptian author Ahmed Khaled Tawfik.

Set in 1960's Egypt, viewers are in store for the mystery and suspense-filled adventures of Dr. Refaat Ismail, a hematologist who has to embark on a series of supernatural events. The show is Netflix's third Middle East original and went into production this month.

Plot

As Dr. Refaat Ismail uncovers mysterious events behind his eerie cases, he descends into the dark of celestial occurrences. The horror series was created to bring to life Ahmed Khaled Tawfik's 81-volume horror series, 'Ma Waraa Al Tabia' which has said to have sold over 15 million copies.

Passing away in 2018, Tawfik is considered to be a leader in Arabic science fiction with over 200 books under his belt. An ode to his dedication to literature, this series is anticipated to upscale the success of his novels.

Cast

The starry cast includes Razane Jammal ('Magy'), Aya Samaha ('Huwaida'), Samaa Ibrahim ('Ra’efa') and Ahmed Amin as the lead role of Dr. Refaat Ismail.

Creators

The director of this adaptation series is Amr Salama, who is also going to co-produce and star in the series. Mohamed Hefsy is a co-producer as well.

According to Netflix, Kelly Luegenbiehl, VP of International Originals at Netflix said, "We are so excited to be investing in more Middle Eastern productions by adapting the highly acclaimed Paranormal series of novels into an exciting show. We're also pleased to collaborate with prominent producer Mohamed Hefzy and director Amr Salama whose creative vision we look forward to bringing to our international audience."
