'On My Block' season 2 trailer sets the mood right after a sombre teaser

Between the tragic cliff-hanger that befell Ruby (Jason Genao) in season 1 and the exceptionally tragic cold open that Netflix teased us with earlier this month, we were worried that the entire tone of ‘On the Block’ is going to change. After all, a death — or even a near-death experience — can change the dynamic within any closely-knit friend group.

However, the trailer for season 2 of ‘On My Block’ that was released on Tuesday, March 12 shows the story in a completely different light than the teaser which was solemn and somber. As we learnt from the teaser, Ruby is alive and well, and considering the promotional photos shared by Netflix, she may have become a legend after surviving the gunshot wound.

He also seems to have gotten a fresh perspective on life after the near-death experience. “I don't want to live the rest of my life in fear or with regret. Every day, we can choose to love instead of hate. I'm gonna focus on the good,” he is seen telling his friends in an impassioned speech.

The fate of his love Olivia (Ronni Hawk), however, continues to be a mystery. Many fans wanted her dead instead of Ruby. Ufortunately, for those of us who like her, Netflix may have paid heed to that noise. She was nowhere to be seen in the teaser, trailer or the production stills from the upcoming season. While there was no legitimate reason for her to be taken off the show, we are worried.

Jasmine (Jessica Marie Garcia), whose obnoxious, loud self we fell in love with, however, will have a bigger role this year. As Garcia told MEA WorldWide in an interview, we will get to see Jasmine’s story and her less-than-ideal family life, which will give us a better understanding of why she behaves the way she does.

In the trailer, too, we see that while she seems to still be annoying Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby and her have become better friends. We even see them perform a dance number together, which is something we are all looking forward to watching.

Another big storyline this time around would be that of Jamal (Brett Gray), who is now $200K richer than he was in the previous season. Despite his friends’ disbelief, Jamal tracked down the RollerWorld money he has been obsessed with but, unfortunately, he now believes his life is in danger. He is now trying to have his friends close by because of this fear.

Monse, meanwhile, is still struggling with her feelings for Cesar (Diego Tinoco). While the two have openly become a couple, Monse still seems to be wondering where she stands in Cesar’s tumultuous life. It does seem like they will find ways to trust each other despite everything else going on around them.

Season 2 of ‘On My Block’ will premiere on Netflix on Friday, March 29.
