LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Avatar: The Last Airbender', the eight-episodic live-action adventure fantasy series, premiered on Netflix on Thursday, February 22. Anticipation and eagerness have been high ever since it was announced in 2018.

For those unfamiliar, the Netflix series is an adaptation of the popular animated television series of the same name (2005–2008).

The original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were initially announced as the showrunners of the Netflix series who later parted ways due to creative differences.

Subsequently, Albert Kim stepped up as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the series, featuring Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, and Dallas Liu in pivotal roles.

Netflix series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' disappoints fans

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' received negative reviews from critics, and unfortunately, it has also left fans of the franchise unimpressed.

Viewers took to micro-blogging site X to share everything they didn't like about the series. A furious fan wrote, "They use dialogue to explain things rather than let it play out naturally, I f*****g hate it," while another person tweeted, "It's f*****g bad."

An unhappy fan of the franchise said, "Garbage! None of the cast have chemistry, it’s like they’re directly reading from the script. A lot of the scenes felt rushed and didn’t hit as hard, also the kyoshi warriors looked goofy. So many things to say, but this shit is trash."

Discontent with the series' debut, a fan expressed frustration by tweeting, "You guys changed the opening monologue why?? That is iconic that should have been the same … so its a bad start for me … i dont like changes."

Reacting to the above post, another fan said, "lol buckle up then because they made a lot of weird changes I don’t really understand. They clearly did not fully understand the universe they only watched atla they didn’t watch korra, they definitely didn’t read the comics like there was so much more they should have researched."

For some people, the performance of Canadian teen actor Gordon Cormier, who played the titular role, failed to impress. An X user said, "The kid is a bad actor," while someone rated the series saying, "At its highest point it’s a 3/10."

The show has not met the expectations of the people. However, people are still watching it to determine if it wins them over by the end.

A fan of the franchise said, "I just watched the first episode and I'm like i dont know what to say, my expectations was higher and for me its not as good as I thought it will be, but ill do watch all season and we will see what they give us and what they do with our best avatar."

Some fans appreciate the freshness in 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

Even though the Netflix series doesn’t successfully capture the essence of the original, it has managed to raise intrigue among a section of the audience.

Praising the efforts, a viewer tweeted, "IM ON EPS 5 !!! There’s actually a lot of changes but that’s ok makes a new refresh, The bending looks amazing !!! Let’s Go!! Eps 2 Was crazy !!"

Another positive comment reads, "So faar soo good!!! Love it! I appreciate the using of original bgm..Appa is soo fluffy ..I don't mind the opening. But! quite rushing. I was expecting the fighting scene on the zuko's ship. Yet, It's okay it's just 1st ep. Aaaa.... so nostlagic."

However, it's hard to overlook the fact that the creators may not have done justice to the legacy of the franchise. Highlighting this, a user said, "Gave episode 1 a 7/10. Really enjoyed it, but lots of room for improvement. My biggest complaints is how rushed through and glossed over some key events are. Hoping future episodes get better!"

Will there be 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Season 2?

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' concluded at an interesting turn, leaving room for another season. However, neither the streaming platform nor the creators have made any announcement of Season 2 yet.

It is too early to speculate if the series will be renewed for another season as it will largely depend on how the existing season performs. In the past, we have seen many shows getting canceled by Netflix when they fail to gather viewership.

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' is now streaming on Netflix.
