'Nightflyers': Fans are all praise for a five-minute opening scene of George R. R. Martin's novella based SyFy space adventure series
As of now, both the first trailer and this new sneak peek has revealed the dark side of the space, and in true'Game of Thrones' meets 'The Shining' style, it's bloody and gory.
Within just half a day of releasing a five-minute opening snippet of SyFy's upcoming space fantasy slash psychological thriller, 'Nightflyers', the show has managed to garner massive response and hype all over social media. Based on George R. R. Martin's novella by the same name, it was initially announced that the space thriller would revolve more around the book, until later in 2017, when it was revealed that it would follow the book's 1987 film adaptation.
As of now, both the first trailer and this new sneak peek has revealed the dark side of the space, and in a very classic 'Game of Thrones' meets 'The Shining' style, it's filled with blood, gore, and slasher horror complete with an axe murderer. The ensemble cast of the show includes some big and familiar names in the industry, with Jodie Turner-Smith starring as Melantha Jhirl, Gretchen Mol as Dr. Agatha Matheson, Eoin Macken as Karl D’Branin — an astrophysicist and leader of the Nightflyer expedition, and David Ajala as Roy Eris — the reclusive Captain of the Nightflyer.
The official synopsis of the show as provided by SyFy describes it as: "Set in the year 2093, 'Nightflyers' is a psychological thriller that follows a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Their mission takes them to the edge of the Solar System, and to the edge of insanity, as they realize true horror isn’t waiting for them in outer space—it’s already on their ship."
And it is this said horror on the ship that viewers are treated with, in the very first five minutes of the show. Agatha Matheson (Gretchen Mol) can be seen in distress, floating in zero gravity inside the spaceship as alarms keep blaring - indicating there's some kind of crisis on the horizon. We soon see patches of blood on her shirt and vest. She can be seen trying to flee from something, and soon the source of the madness becomes clear as a faint, whistling comes from the distance, adding to the eerie quotient of the scene.
