'New Amsterdam' Season 3 Episode 7: Why did Dr Kapoor resign? Here's the real reason fans won't see Anupam Kher

While Dr Kapoor's resignation came as a huge surprise, fans are upset because they will miss Dr Iggy and Dr Kapoor's friendship

It's a development that we suspected was coming, but when pictures surfaced of what seemed to be a surprise party for Dr Kapoor (Anupam Kher), with his name spelled out in his favorite sweet treat ladoos, we thought that perhaps Kapoor would at least be a part of 'New Amsterdam' virtually if not physically on the set. This is due to actor Kher's current challenges with his wife's recent blood cancer diagnosis. Kher's wife Kirron is currently undergoing treatment in India, so this was bound to be a challenging situation for the makers of the show, especially in a pandemic. 

The latest episode of 'New Amsterdam' begins with Dr Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) getting the party going to welcome Dr Kapoor back to the hospital. However, he has a tough time keeping all the party guests in one place, since Dr Kapoor is running late. However after quite a bit of time passes and most of the party guests leave, Dr Agnes Kao (Christine Chang) says that Dr Kapoor has resigned. He has sent a mail to the whole neurology department. Dr Iggy is furious that Dr Kapoor hasn't told him and leaves an irate message on Dr Kapoor's answering machine, saying he can't believe that Dr Kapoor told the whole neurology department before he said anything to Iggy.

Fans are pretty furious as well. One fan tweeted, "We went from begging yall not to kill Dr. Kapoor off the show to him resigning. Is there a difference between the two ....hellooooooooooooo. Yall took him off the show like Whyyyyyyyyy. The people yall need to kill off yall not ... #newamsterdam We need Dr. Kapor backkkkkkkk." Another tweeted, "I rebuke this development. Somebody needs to go to Dr. Kapoor’s house or something. #NewAmsterdam."

Iggy then reaches out to Dr Vijay after his outburst and tells Vijay that he loves him, but if Vijay doesn't pick up the phone and talk to him, then they can't be friends anymore because he has to draw boundaries. Fans were quite heartbroken since Iggy and Vijay's friendship was one of the highlights of the show. One fan tweeted, "Dr. Kapoor’s friendship with Dr. Frome is one of my favorite parts of #NewAmsterdam’s story...gonna miss all the lessons & wisdom he brought to the show."

While it seems that we will not see Dr Kapoor on the show with his resignation, fans are hoping that there will be space for Dr Kapoor to return at some point. One fan tweeted, "I'm (not) okay with Vijay taking some time off to recover, but I need him to show up at least mid season or end of season. We can't lose Dr. Kapoor."

Iggy finally speaks to Ella, Dr Kapoor's friend and the mother of his grandchild, who tells Iggy that a month ago, Vijay's doctor told him that he would never work again. Vijay didn't believe the doctor at first, but when it came down to returning to the hospital, Vijay finally couldn't even step out the front door. Since then he has gone into a shell and refuses to talk to anyone, including Ella about it.

Will Iggy give Vijay the space he needs and accept his resignation or will he manage to convince Vijay to at least come back to the hospital to say a proper goodbye? At the end of the episode, we see that Dr Iggy realizes that his anger at Dr Kapoor is selfish to some extent because Dr Kapoor was always like a father figure to Iggy.
