'New Amsterdam' Season 3 Episode 5: Will Dr Kao take over from Dr Kapoor after handling Asian hate crime?

Dr Kao shares with Max how she was also a victim of a hate crime at height of pandemic

In the last few episodes of Season 3, Dr Agnes Kao (Christine Chang) is shown floundering without her mentor Dr Vijay Kapoor (Anupam Kher), as he recovers from Covid. It may, however, take a while before we see Kapoor back in action, which explains why Dr Kao's storyline is now taking a leap forward.

In the latest episode, we see Dr Kao's impressive diagnosis of a Filipina factory worker who comes in blind. Dr Kao cannot understand what has led to her symptoms, it is only when she sees her flinch at sudden sounds or movements that she realizes some sort of abuse is at play. The patient then confides to Dr Kao that she was the victim of a hate crime, that two men at the height of the pandemic punched her several times in the abdomen, for bringing the virus to America. Dr Kao then realizes it is due to the repeated trauma to her abdomen that now the patient's liver is not working and that has led to the sudden blindness.

Max (Ryan Eggold) is so impressed by Dr Kao's diagnosis that he makes her interim chair of the neurology department. Dr Kao shares with Max that the reason she was able to diagnose her patient was because she herself had started to flinch at sudden noises and movements. She was also subjected to hate when she was grabbed on the street and spat on, when the pandemic was at its worst. Max asks why she didn't share this earlier, to which Dr Kao says this was happening to so many Asians at the time and she just wanted to do her job.

Dr Kao has certainly won herself many new fans after this episode. One fan tweeted, "//I love Dr.Kao so much she's my new fave #NewAmsterdam." Another said, "Dr. Kao is doing an amazing job #NewAmsterdam."

Others tweeted that they weren't surprised, after all Dr Kao learnt from the best. A fan tweeted saying, "Dr. Kao did EXACTLY what Dr. Kapoor would do, just sit and listen to the patient. @NBCNewAmsterdam

As much as fans are loving Dr Kao, they also want to know when Dr Kapoor will be back. One fan tweeted, "I love Dr. Kao, but I’m gonna need to see Kapoor again. #NewAmsterdam" Another fan tweeted, "I’m drawing a blank, what happened to Dr. Kapoor? Is he ok now?" 

Another fan asked, "Does Dr. Kapoor get air time this season? Or even Ella #NewAmsterdam"
