'New Amsterdam' Season 3: Will Dr Cassian Shin and Dr Helen Sharpe's blooming love quash #Sharpwin romance?
Spoilers for 'New Amsterdam'
The NBC series came to a quick season ending in April of this year with the airing of Season 2 Episode 18, 'Matter of Seconds', owing to a halt in production triggered by the pandemic. The series, inspired by Dr Eric Manheimer's memoir 'Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital', also had a pandemic episode that was shelved to be sensitive to the real pandemic that the world was tackling when that episode was supposed to be aired.
The episode chronicles how America's oldest public hospital's staff deal with multiple patients all coming in with similar and scary symptoms. We see Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) and Dr Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) frantically try to figure out what's causing the symptoms is so many patients while Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) tries to help a young patient with a rare muscular disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) get into a sole clinical trial available in the country, to help extend his life. The Season 2 finale was an emotional one, we were introduced to trauma surgeon Dr Cassian Shin, played by Daniel Dae Kim. The episode sees him speak to Dr Helen about how "self-care" can actually save lives, with the end of the episode teasing a romance between the duo. We'd like to now bring attention to the fact that there is a #Sharpwin fandom shipping Dr Max and Dr Helen, but with Dr Shin now in the picture is #Sharpwin over?
Season 2 also saw Dr Max end his romance with Alice Healy (Alison Luff) giving us hope that #Sharpwin could actually be a thing. There is a fandom for a reason, and in more ways than one, Dr Max and Dr Helen are absolutely perfect for each other. He is very supportive of Helen, they help each other with more than just cases, Helen is absolutely amazing with Max's son, and much more. We were really anticipating #Sharpwin in Season 3. But, Max is still trying to figure out the whole being a single parent thing, along with running a hospital. Granted, he may not be in the best headspace to be in yet another romantic entanglement, Helen did have an opening considering Alice is out of the picture. Alice, as we saw, seemed to be a rebound for Max, he wasn't really ready to move on. So, yes, it's a little devastating that we're not going to see the #Sharpwin train move forward. Unfortunately for the fandom, all this was confirmed by creator and executive producer David Schulner who revealed, "Sharpe and Cassian are going to become a thing. They're good for each other, and it's great for her to see that Max's way isn't the only way." While we understand the character development angle, we'd be lying if we said we weren't a little sad.
Going forward, and knowing that the series will eventually tackle a pandemic episode, we don't think Max will be dwelling on romance. Then again, we're not too sure about quick things that will play out romantically with Cassian and Helen. We also don't know how Max would react to it? What we do know is that the #Sharpwin will have to take a back seat for now and brace ourselves to watch the Cassian and Helen romance bloom.
The official release date for 'New Amsterdam' Season 3 is yet to be announced. Stay tuned for updates.
