VENICE, ITALY: Prime Video's anticipated action-comedy, 'My Spy: The Eternal City', has finally hit screens on Thursday, July 18, 2024. Directed by Peter Segal, this sequel to the original 'My Spy' reunites audiences with Dave Bautista's JJ, a tough-as-nails CIA operative, and Chloe Coleman's Sophie, the sharp-witted young girl who once blackmailed him into teaching her spy skills.

The film also features an impressive cast, including Kristen Schaal, Ken Jeong, Anna Faris, Flula Borg, Taeho K, Billy Barratt, Craig Robinson, Tamer Burjaq, and Paul du Toit. The original 'My Spy' faced mixed reviews and financial struggles, partly due to its release amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

With 'My Spy: The Eternal City,' the creators aim to revive the franchise, blending action and comedy in the picturesque backdrop of Rome. As the story unfolds, JJ and Sophie find themselves in another thrilling adventure, promising fans a mix of humor, action, and heartfelt moments that could elevate this sequel above its predecessor.

'My Spy: The Eternal City' is a visual spectacle with a comic misfire

'My Spy: The Eternal City' flaunts its increased budget with lavish locations, amped-up action, and solid performances from Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman. Bautista shines as the lovable yet lethal CIA operative, while Coleman continues to impress as a rising star.

However, despite these strengths, the sequel falls short of delivering laughs and fails to capitalize on its comedic potential. The film's over-the-top action sequences overshadow any attempts at genuine humor, leaving audiences longing for memorable comedic moments that never quite materialize.

Even with a talented cast known for their comedic prowess, the humor feels forced and lacks the spark expected from such seasoned performers. Anna Faris, in particular, struggles with lackluster writing and direction, squandering her comedic talents in a role that fails to showcase her strengths.

Ultimately, 'My Spy: The Eternal City' misses the mark by prioritizing action over humor, resulting in a disappointing viewing experience that fails to live up to its potential. 'My Spy: The Eternal City' struggles with its identity, wavering between a slapstick comedy for Dave Bautista fans and a more mature audience appeal.

Despite moments that aren't entirely unbearable, the film never finds its rhythm, squandering the talents of Anna Faris, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong along the way.

'My Spy: The Eternal City' offers a bittersweet experience with a lack of balance

'My Spy: The Eternal City' succeeds in exploring JJ and Sophie's evolving relationship, which forms the heart of the film. Their bond and reconciliation bring a touching conclusion, offering a satisfying emotional arc.

However, the movie falters in balancing its sentimental themes with action and comedy. Sophie's maturity isn't matched by the humor, which still targets a younger audience, leaving older viewers wanting.

The predictable villain reveals and generic crisis undermines the stakes. Despite a star-studded cast and a playful premise, the film lacks the uproarious humor it promises.

It struggles to find its identity between a children's action-comedy and one suitable for adults, hinting at the potential for a spinoff focused on Sophie's adventures but ultimately keeping JJ front and center.

Ultimately, this left us to wonder if this sequel needed to happen. With better writing and more powerful humor and action scenes, this spy thriller could have been the uproarious adventure it aimed to be.

'My Spy: The Eternal City' is available for streaming on Prime Video.
