'My cut is vastly better': David Ayer says 'Suicide Squad' was 're-engineered' during post-production

'The nature of the film was fundamentally changed,' David Ayer tweeted

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a recent tweet, 'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer claimed his cut of the film is better than the released version. 'Suicide Squad', which was released in 2016, was the subject of huge criticism and was widely panned in reviews.

'Suicide Squad' contained a star-studded ensemble that included Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Cara Delevingne as The Enchantress. Despite the criticism, 'Suicide Squad' went on to win an Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.

According to Comicbook, Ayer has earlier claimed the studio interfered with his cut of the film. In his recent tweet, while replying to a fan's post about the director's cut, Ayer said the movie was completely "re-engineered" in post-production. He noted that this was different from adding additional scenes to the movie as it rendered fundamental changes to the film. He further went on to confess that his version of 'Suicide Squad' is much better. 

"Normally you’re absolutely right. This is an extraordinary case of a movie being utterly re-engineered in post. It’s not a couple cut scenes being added. The nature of the film was fundamentally changed. I’m looking you in the eye telling you this. My cut is vastly better," he wrote.

Set during the aftermath of the events of 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016), 'Suicide Squad' follows the story of an intelligence officer in a government secret agency (Amanda Waller), recruiting some of the most dangerous prisoners (Supervillains) to form a team called Task Force X (Suicide Squad). The group is tasked to prevent the impending apocalypse caused by The Enchantress. This movie also had a mid-credit scene with Bruce Wayne and Amanda Waller setting up for 'Justice League' (2017).

It is also to be noted that a recent reboot of the suicide squad was released in 2021 titled 'The Suicide Squad', directed by James Gunn. Gunn is now co-chairman of DC along with Peter Safran. Whether or not an Ayer Cut will be released is yet to be known.

'Suicide Squad' (2016) is now streaming on HBO Max.
