MTV VMAs 2021: BTS gets 5 nods, tough fight with Monsta X, Blackpink, Seventeen in Best K-Pop

Monsta X has been nominated every time in the Best K-Pop category along with BTS while this is Twice and Seventeen's first VMA nominations

The MTV Video Music Awards is one of the biggest music award shows and has often been dubbed as the ‘Super Bowl’ of pop culture. Since its inaugural in 1984, the award show nominates and awards the best of the best in the music industry. The show has also gone global by recognizing Latin, as well as K-pop artists. In fact, the VMAs introduced the category ‘Best K-Pop Video’ in 2019.

Last year, at the MTV VMAs 2020, we saw BTS get nominated for Best Pop as well as win it with their lead single ‘On’. They also won in the Best K-Pop category amongst nominees like (G)I-DLE, EXO, Monsta X, TXT and Red Velvet. BTS also won Best Choreography and Best Group. Monsta X was also nominated for Best Group while Blackpink won the Song Of The Summer with ‘How You Like That’. Let us take a look at the K-pop acts that will be gracing the MTV VMAS 2021.

K-pop nominees of VMAs 2021

BTS and Monsta X are the most nominated K-pop acts in the Best K-Pop category as both groups have been nominated thrice. There are a total of six K-pop acts nominated for the Best K-Pop category:

Blackpink and Selena Gomez - ‘Ice Cream’
This is the K-pop girl group’s second nomination in the category. They were first nominated with ‘Kill This Love’ in 2019. They were also nominated for Best Group in 2019 and 2020.

BTS - ‘Butter’
They’ve had a total of 14 nominations. They’ve won Best Group and Best K-Pop in 2019 and 2020. They also won all the categories they were nominated in in 2020.

(G)I-DLE - ‘DUMDi DUMDi’
They’ve been nominated in this category back to back with ‘Oh My God’ in 2020.

Monsta X - ‘Gambler’
They have been nominated all three times since the launch of this category. In 2019, it was with ‘Who Do U Love’ and in 2020 it was with ‘Someone’s Someone’. This is their first nomination with a Korean language song.

Seventeen - ‘Ready to love’
This is the boy group’s first nomination at the VMAs.

Twice - ‘Alcohol-Free’
This is the girl group’s first nomination at the VMAs.

BTS’ ‘Dynamite’ is also nominated for Song Of The Year while ‘Butter’ is nominated for Best Pop, Best Choreography and Best Editing. In total, BTS has been nominated in 5 categories. They’re also the most nominated group or band followed by Foo Fighters with 3 nominations.

But the competition in the Best K-Pop category itself is high as each nominated group has done well. With ranking high on charts like Billboard to breaking and making sales records, we also have fans rigorously voting to get their favorites a VMA win. While chart statistics and the actual music videos will be considered, the criteria also include fan votes.

Fans can vote for their favorite nominees till September 3 on the VMA website. One person can also vote 20 times a day. ‘Yes deserved’

K-pop Twitter was excited as they congratulated their favorites and got ready to vote for them. One ARMY tweeted, “BTS ARTIST OF THE CENTURY ( @BTS_twt ) spend 19 weeks on Billboard Artist 100 charts +they are the MOST NOMINATED ARTIST on #VMAs.” A Neverland posted, “GIDLE SELF MADE QUEENS.” A Blink cheered the Blackpink fandom, “Last year we won 2020s VMAs SONG OF SUMMER.. we can make it again this years for BEST KPOP SONG.. WE CAN WIN THIS FOR OUR QUEENS.”

A Carat similarly commented, “svt in the soop will be aired every sundays & tuesdays, daily gose episodes every wednesday + inse .. we are spoiled, aren't we? that's why we have to pay them back as we vote them on VMAs for the best kpop category LET'S WIN THIS FOR OUR BOYS.” Monbebes were especially excited since the song nominated was made by Jooheon, “Charted on billboard, broke mx's previous streaming records, was played at the olympics and is now nominated at the vmas. the first jooheon produced title track did that.” And a ONCE hyped up their group, “TWICE IS FUCKING NOMINATED ON BEST K-POP 2021 WITH ALCOHOL-FREE AT THE VMAS!!!!!!! YALL!!!!!! TWICE IS NOMINATED AT THE VMAS!!!!!!! OMFG YES DESERVED.”
