2021 MAMA nominations: Fans of snubbed K-pop acts like GOT7, Chungha say 'fck mnet'

Fans need not wait any longer as the 2021 MAMA nominations are finally out. The Mnet Asian Music Awards aka MAMA is probably one of the biggest K-pop award shows ever. Since its first edition in 1999, it has been held all over Asia, from South Korea to Japan. With K-pop getting global thanks to the Hallyu Wave, MAMA is also live-streamed as millions of international fans tune in to see their favorite artists get honored. Even the global pandemic couldn’t dampen spirits as the 2020 MAMA went on with pomp and glamor.

The 2020 star-studded nominations had equally impressive performances that wowed everyone. One of the highlights was Mnet using 2020 MAMA to introduce some of the participants of their fierce survival show ‘Kingdom: Legendary War’ with Ateez, Stray Kids and The Boyz collaborating. We had BoA making a comeback as she performed ‘Only One’ with her labelmate Taemin. All 23 members of NCT got together with the latest members Shotaro and Sungchan joining them.

K-pop acts snubbed at MAMA 2021

While ‘Vincenzo’ star Song Joong-ki hosted last year, the 2021 MAMA is already historical with K-pop legend Lee Hyori becoming the first female host of the award show. With it being held on December 11, 2021, the nominations are already out. Thanks to some iconic releases this year, the nominations have caused quite an uproar among K-pop fans. While some of the fans' favorite artists were nominated, some were snubbed in the 'Main Awards' categories. Veteran artists like Mamamoo, GOT7 members and Sunmi were missing from the nominated list. It should be noted that the 'Worldwide Fan's Choice' category which is fan votes-based is different from the 'Main Awards'.

Upset fans had a lot to say while cursing Mnet. With Red Velvet members finally going solo, a Reveluv tweeted about their snub, “Lots of records broken by Joy and Wendy left and right but still got snubbed by mnet... why did i even fckng expect ://.” It should be noted that Golden Child had three brilliant comebacks which is why one fan shared, “Me still being in shock after mnet snubbed golden child.” GOT7 on the other hand had each and every member releasing music this year, “What mnet/ mama is missing. #GOT7.”

Mamamoo’s emotional comeback in celebration of their anniversary had one fan saying, “Wait a minute!!! I just checked all the MAMA nominees and saw the Mamamoo was snubbed! Wth! Didn’t they CB with an album of their live power ballads?” Seventeen Hoshi’s solo debut trended on all of the social media platforms which had a Carat adding, “Spider not being nominated for best solo dance at mamas just might be my villain origin story like.. my man straight up hung upside down and got choked just to be snubbed the disrespect.” With rumors of Justin Bieber attending MAMA, a Monsta X fan tweeted, “Justin Bieber heard MX got snubbed and said F*CK MAMA iktr.”

An Atiny posted, “Even non atinys wondering why ateez got snubbed, mama is a joke.” EXO Kai’s solo debut was considered one of the best of the year which is why an EXO-L commented, “KAI’S MMMH NOT BEING NOMINATED FOR THE BEST DANCE PERFORMANCE DOESN’T SIT RIGHT WITH ME.” SHINee’s Taemin was the busiest this year with back to back comebacks before his military enlistment, “Taemin didnt define a whole subgenre for himself only to be continuously snubbed by mnet.”

A Chungha fan shared, “Chungha did not put her blood sweat and tears into her first full length album Querencia with 21 tracks, 3 pre release tracks and 3 dance performances and a special song for her fans only to be ignored by MAMA, in this essay I will.” With BTOB doing a favor to Mnet by joining ‘Kingdom’, one fan added, “Wah MNET !! You invited BTOB to join Kingdom global then treat them bad during the show and now among all Kingdom group, only BTOB is not nominated for global fans choice......  Dang !” A Sunmi fan tweeted, “Does mama know sunmi tail choreo existed because HELLO ???” A The Boyz fan commented, “Fck mnet for not including tbz on best male group nomination.”
